Tunnel ram finished!...for now

heres the link to my cardomain page....the last picture is the finished product...all the porting and epoxy work is done and ready to run. Now I just have to tune it all and finish the rest of the car.

Looks great.. i bet your car scoots..
'72 Vega with '93 Camaro LT1/M29 T56/12 bolt 3.31. 16" IROCs all around. Sanderson headers into duals with an H-pipe and Flowmasters. It's loud but at least it's faster than your grandma's Buick. pwned.

I painted instead of polishing because of a couple reasons.
I was actually wanting to try to retain some heat in the manifold to help low speed atomization...with so much aluminum surface area its just a big heat sink.

I also Broke my dremel before I painted it, I have since gotten a new one but by then it was already painted...and there was NO way i was gonna hand polish that monster.

And last but not least.....I dont like shiny things.....I hate chrome this, polished that, Im not saying its bad...Im just saying I dont like it.
I couldnt help but get the one regulator polished because thats the only way they came...Holley doesnt make a satin finish on the regulators anymore.
The regulator brackets just have the machined finish and look alot shinier at that angle than they really are.

Heck who knows...itll probably be slow....lol....J/K I hope.

I'm with you guys. I like the black wrinkle stuff. Kinda like that Harley outlaw bike a few years back. I like the look of clean alloys too.

What do you think about braided steel lines though? I have to admit after getting them for my Turbo car because I was nervous about loosing a line a frying the turbo. After I installed them I really liked they way they looked too.

I like the braided line OK but its a PAIN (literally) to work with.
Talk about bleeding fingers...I much rather prefer the nylon black braided lines...much less painful to put together.

As far as valve covers i really like the cast aluminum look or the welded aluminum brushed look.

It's just a matter of choice. Once you choose a direction it's best to stick with it throughout the whole engine compartment. You want to stick with one theme, otherwise it just looks confused. In other words, don't put aluminum valve covers etc., with a bunch of chrome stuff. You don't want some brackets chromed and others painted or aluminum. Stick with one theme and it will look better.

Clyde, You need to get to work detailing that engine. Some of the pleats on the air filter are out of alignment!

without trying to be negative, from past engines with tunnel rams on them, I think youll find youll need to change out the carbs. The vacum secondaries dont work very well at all on a tunnel ram, the signal they receive from the engine, being so far away from the source is small and basicly youll have (2) 2bls running around, to get a ram to work youll need a set of center squirters or double pumpers to get it to work. When you mash the gas it will just "cough", too lean and you cant add enough pump squirter to those, even with 50cc pumps on the front.

I have gotten 2 different pairs of vacuum sec Holleys to work on my edelbrock tunnel ram on my 355 sbc. granted it took some work but it was not all that difficult.

A few things i'd like to point out. I picked the edelbrock ram because it has a smaller plenum than many of the others that were available when i originally built the engine in the early 80's. I used lighter than stock secondary springs and i used a vacuum secondary equalizer (a hose than runs from the top of each secondary vacuum housing ---they were sold by Holley - might still be). i also worked on different jets and mettering plates.

I did all this because i intended to drive the car - a lot - on the street. And once done it worked very well , but yeah it was a lot of work. The cam, torque converter and rear gears were all set to work with the engine , worked well from about 2300 up to 6500.

Only real trouble i had was the trans would get a little hot when i cruised at 60 on the interstate because the converter would slip a bit at 2500 rpms or lower..

Anyway the first carbs were 390 cfms they worked great but i later changed them out to 456 cfm ones beacuse the engine seemed to want more fuel on the top end when i ran the car in the 1/4. The car picked up mph when i did that but little to no change in e.t.

With full exhaust and street tires the car run low 12s (best was 12.01) 60 ft time was ridiculous but MPH was around 115 i think i ran 116 or so once . the timeslips are all from the 80's and have since faded so i am only left with my bad memory :)

I agree for all out power mechanical secondary carbs would work better.
