Cracked PCV valve! What should I do?

Postby Yellowbird77 » Sun Feb 10, 2008 1:13 am

I have been studying how to do a rebuild on my carburetor for about a month now, and as of tonight I finally finished doing my rebuild(it took about 3 days with parts order/cleaning/rebuilding)........

Anyway, I was hooking it back up on the intake manifold and while hooking up the vacuum hose from the back of the carb to the pcv valve, the valve cracked! I forced it a little too hard, and it broke. The botttom of the valve is exposed, I can see a spring and I saw the plunger fall out.

Do I just get a new PCV valve and pop it in? I was afraid that possibly the valve had broken in the manifold, but does the valve just plug into it?

I think it's just the bottom of the cap that broke off, if it helps I'll take a couple pics and put em up.

Thanks for any suggestions!

PVC valve

Postby MIKESMONZA » Sun Feb 10, 2008 2:21 am

 You could retreve the broken piece out of a valve cover with a piece of chewing gum on the end of a telescoping magnet,,, long screwdriver ,,or a clean dipstick,,, pencil. You meant the valve cover on the V6 or a V8 or in line 4 Where it plugs in to the ruber gromet. If the hose is hard replace it with the new PVC valve.. If it was in your intake manifold I am unaware of its design,,,, If the intake was open with out a carburetor on top and the piece fell in  ,,I could see what your concern is about Hope this helps .Mike

You guys were right! The bottom of the valve was stuck in the top of the intake manifold(you got it, Marco!)--I used a flathead screwdriver to pry it up from inside the broken-off bottom of the valve. Then I grabbed it with a pair needle-nose pliers and it came out! It was a plastic PCV valve, so I replaced it with a metal one and new vacuum hose. My rebuild has worked so far, now I have to set the curb idle mixture...

Thanks for your help!

I always plug the pcv vacuum line and vent the engine with a peice of rubber hose about two foot long. If you engine is not worn out it wont matter. What really causes smog is all the rubber worn off peoples tires.
