TPI, here i come.

Postby marz » Thu Jun 26, 2008 1:21 pm

Hey kids,

A buddy of mine just offered me the engine and transmission out of his 88 firebird formula. It's the 5.0L TPI 305 engine and T5 transmission.

Sure, the engine will need to be rebuilt and we're gonna go through the transmission, but i'm looking to pick your brains on how to make the TPI system the cleanest, most simple setup possible. Not really intending to run a ton of accessories... in fact, there's really only the power steering that matters. I'm almost positive Ill have to run the V belt system instead of a serpentine belt, and there's screwing around with a hydraulic clutch that need to done, but my main concern is making the TPI an easy install.

Just want it to be a simple, if not elegant setup. You know?

thanks in advance,

dave

You could use any pulley setup from a long water pump small block, it's not reverse flow or anything. I would just get something from an earlier 70's Chevy, or for a few hundred, you can probably get something nice from March or something like that, they make basic kits for around $400.

Myself? For the blazer, I'm just going to use the serpentine setup that came with the 87 TPI. It's cleaner than the overly complicated V-belt system on my 86 TPI engine, but on the other hand... I do need the A/C, smog pump, and power steering, so I need to stick factory.

You could try Painless Wiring. They'll burn a chip with there system if you want to ad some performance stuff to the engine too. http://www.painlessperformance.com/webc ... ield=65104

Pass on Painless burning you a chip. If you are a bit more techy you can burn your own PROM real-time with a system from Moates.net

Craig is an awesome guy. I built his website a few years back. He'll definitely get you going (and may have a PROM that will be close for your setup).

If you have questions, let me know. I have had 4 TPI-based IROC-Z Camaros.
'72 Vega with '93 Camaro LT1/M29 T56/12 bolt 3.31. 16" IROCs all around. Sanderson headers into duals with an H-pipe and Flowmasters. It's loud but at least it's faster than your grandma's Buick. pwned.

Actually I notice that Painless burned chips on there home page. When I later looked at the listing for the computer, I notice that they also sell a kit to make the computer self programmable.
