Offenhauser four barrel intake carb question

Postby kgroombr » Sun Mar 15, 2009 9:45 pm

I recently acquired an Offenhauser four barrel manifold (with adapter plate) for the 140. What kind of carb should I use on it? I checked the forums and FAQ using the search and didn't find anything. Any help would be great.

Thanks,
Ken

Back in the day I think the Holley 390 was a popular choice.

Wow!

The carb is like six times more money than I paid for the intake. Wonder if it is worth it.

There are a few different 390's holleys that have been made in the past...I dont recomend the new ones.

MIght try a 450cfm mechanical secondary carb if youve got enough rear gear...but the 8007 is not the way to go...I dont recall the cab numbers that are desireable...but I have a pair of them in my garage...I will go check them out if you want me to get the numbers for you.

God bless

I can say from experience that if you can find one, the 390 Holley will work great- 17.9's at 80mph great! That's on a stock 76 140 with a Spearco intake and a header, with T-50 trans and 3.42 gears. I drove the car all one summer and it was a blast! Orangeastre ran the same parts for a while as well- they're now listed in the "for sale" section. Don't bother asking him- he won't separate carb & intake.
The "fleet"-
72 Vega HB Drag Car -383/'Glide/9"(9.35@146.19)(5.94@117.28 1/8th)
77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)
06 Silverado 2WD ex.cab daily
03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter
06 GMC Canyon Shop truck
07 Colorado project( 5.3 4L60e swap)
99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project
07 Saturn Ion Redline project
and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"
Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....

Thanks,

Finding a carb is low on my priority right now, but will keep looking to see if I can find one at a cheap price. Any guess on what mods I would need to make to the 390 for it to function properly on a 140? Jetting, etc?

Thanks,
Ken
