Rusty Tuesday gas tank and sending unit

Postby gm_fan » Tue Aug 25, 2009 10:49 pm

I dropped my gas tank this afternoon and boy was it ugly! It had about 2 gallons of rusty water and gas. Is there anyway to make it useable? It is not rusted through ,just has lots of surface rust inside. I would say the sending unit is junk. I will post some pics tomorrow but I was thinking of possibly trying to use some muratic acid and water [strong] and see what happens. Any suggestions will be appreciated..I plan on runnning a 3/8 gas line up the passenger side of the car where the vent line for the tank was and also need some suggestions about what to do on a pump and sending unit...thanks By the way the car has been off the road since 1980 and is very low miles, but the gas tank sure looks bad

Before you try cleaning it yourself, check with the nearest radiator rebuild shop: they should have a "hot tank" that is used for that exact purpose. Whatever they charge you will probably not be a whole lot more than what it would cost you to buy some industrial strength acid. And you won't have to figure out how to dispose of the nasty stuff when your done.

Many (30ish) years ago I worked in a custom motorcycle shop, and we had a similar product to seal gas tanks after they had been fabricated or repaired. It looked kinda like yellow contact cement, and you poured it in the tank, rolled it around to distribute it evenly, and poured the excess back in the can. It was not cheap, but it worked great.

I just wanted to let everyone know I was at the salvage yard today and know them quite well being in the transmission business. They let me prowl around through their pump and sending units they had and I found quite an amazing discovery. The pump and sender out of a Buick Le Sabre[1994] is the same size as my monza unit as far as the length from top to bottom and where it fastens to the tank is also the same size. The index pegs are different, but quite simple to remove and the hold down ring is exactly the same as the monza. The Buick has three line, one 3/8 fuel supply, one return line and one vent line. The Buick is port injected V-6 with pump pressures around 50 psi..I am running a 800 holley on my car with dual lines and a fuel pressure regulator and this should be an ideal unit for conversion.. Even the lines are monza friendly...Just to let anyone know if they are looking like I was. My tank was rusty but after cleaning and sealing with aircraft tank sealer its good to go..
