17083= 1983
2= 49 state emissions
7 = Pontiac
8 = auto trans

Look for an 79 or earlier carb if possible as Clyde suggested ( non computor /emissions carb)

I know its a bit late(?) but if it helps here is the NAPA # for a Q-jet kit.2-5192C. it has a spec sheet for 78-86 Qjs,should get you going.Also Haynes has a book on Qjs,#10230.Found it at Advance Auto.Lots of pics,lots of info if you are going to "step on it"now and then.

If it's electronically controlled in any way, it's worthless. Remember every Q-Jet carb was tuned at the factory to the vehicle it was going on. Make any performance modifications (or move the carb to a different engine), and now your calibration could very well be off.

But I would stay with a carb number beginning in '170' rather than going back so far into the '70' carbs. The 170's have an externally adjustable APT to fine tune between rich and lean.

Cliff Ruggles' book is even better than Doug Roe's....my opinion.
