I was rich..

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Mon May 24, 2010 10:33 pm

Not in the good way...

Found my monza running pretty rich today (Holley go figure)

I didn't see any obvious signs of flooding like leaking nozzles so I hooked up the timing light and vacuum gauge.

I found that the timing and gotten pushed to about 16 to 18 degree's advanced. I set that back to 12.

With the Vacuum reading still low at 15 with a big intermittent drop to 10 I decided to bring the idle misture screws in.

I found that I could bring them to nearly closed before the car would stall out. I set them both for barely a half turn out..

I went for a ride, and found a big improvement in takeoff smoothness, and overall power.

Why does my holley want to run with the idle screws turned in so far? Only a half turn out?

Does the car drive ok? Is it just an improvement in idle and initial take off? If it runs good overall, I would check the idle air bleeds. They may have some dirt clogging them up or just might be too small to begin with. Once you clean them you should be able to open up the idle mixture screws.

sounds like the power valve might have blown , or there is a leak somewhere you cant see

If there is a vacuum leak then you have to compensate with a richer setting. Check all your vacuum hoses for cracks and tightness.

Thanks, I dont think the PV could have blown yet, its new and I've never once backfired thru the carb.

It took all the stumbling away at part throttle cruise. The idle bucking and kicking in 1st gear @ idle was still around, but was much tamer than before. I leaving to go take it for a cruise right now, we'll see how it does today.

Wondering if I should have dissassembled the base plate , for a thourough cleaning when I rebuilt the rest of the carb.

Thanks for the replies

Not real familiar with the holley carbs but most other carbs I have worked on , Either the float level to high or restricted air bleeds in the idle circuit . Did you have to adjust the idle speed up after dialing the idle mixture down ?
