MSD Blaster coil - mounted vertically?

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Fri Jul 02, 2010 9:31 pm

I just read that it is recommended that an MSD Blaster coil be mounted vertically and not horizontally.

I've run mine horizontally for years, and it seems to work fine, but I wonder what kind of damage I may have done to the windings?

As I understand it, they're liquid filled and have an air pocket exposing some of the windings when mounted horizontally. This causes a hot spot which shortens the life of the coil.

Anyone ever heard of this? Anyone run an MSD blaster coil sideways?

Mines old. I think its oil filled. It may have even been leaking out, there's always been a slight oily mess at the tower. I now realize its been leaking, its not just dirty.

I'm wondering if I actually have a weak coil now.

If your coil is oil filled, it DOES need to be mounted vertically...If you can shake it and hear it slosh...its oil filled.

Sounds like it might be time for a new coil if yours is leaking Marco.

Thanks Shred, maybe... But of course this afternoon the car responded well to some other things I did, and is running super. The idle lurching almost fully tamed. So if the coil is bad, sure doesnt feel like it now..
