Postby Chevy_Punk » Wed Nov 10, 2010 3:22 am

I'm looking at getting a new carb for my Spyder over the winter. But i'm not sure what cfm or brand. This is my setup. mild 383 stroker, performer intake, currently 650 edelbrock, th350 tranny. it is a street/strip car. Thanks in advanced.

If your "mild" 383 never sees the high side of 6000 rpm, a 650 should be plenty. The other extreme is the 383 going into my drag car- it has an 850 DP Holley, but that's there to feed a set of AFR 227 heads and a wild cam. Personally, I like the Edelbrock(remember when we used to call them "Carters"?) for a street car with an automatic; leave the Holley double pumpers to the stick shift and loose converter crowd. Don't count out the old Quadrajet; a properly tuned one can deliver good manners and mileage on the street but still kick butt at the track. Technically, most Q-jets are rated at 750 CFM, but the secondaries only ever open far enough to flow what the engine demands.
The "fleet"-
72 Vega HB Drag Car -383/'Glide/9"(9.35@146.19)(5.94@117.28 1/8th)
77 Vega Estate wagon- project(someday)will have TPI305/T-5, S-10 spindles/axles
76 Vega GT- 400/4spd/9" retired from active duty(rusty)
06 Silverado 2WD ex.cab daily
03 Silverado 2WD ex.cab (retired)
06 Haulin' 20ft enclosed car transporter
06 GMC Canyon Shop truck
07 Colorado project( 5.3 4L60e swap)
99 Saturn SL1- wife's car
01 Saturn SC2- son's project
07 Saturn Ion Redline project
and 4 more Saturn "parts cars"
Note- the very act of listing all of these has made me realize I have some kind of problem.....

Ya can tune that 750 to run pretty good with your 383. But I am a holly nut case.. I love them old junker carbs..

But to be honest Spencerforhire pretty much tells ya like it is.. If ya want a out of the box carb with less fuss
Go get ya a Edelbrock/Quadrajet.. Faster throttle response and gas mileage with a Q-jets kind of carb..
It's hard for an old street racer to stay on the safe side of stupid

I guess I'll just rebuild my 650 then. Save me a few bucks
