Which Tunnel Ram?

Hello, I'm gonna be building a new engine for my '73 Vega after the holidays. It's going to be a small block stroker motor, probably a 427 or at least a 406. I've got my mind set on a tunnel ram and I'm currently looking at either an edelbrock street tunnel or a victor tunnel. I'm going to mostly drag race this car but I'm keeping it street legal. I'll be running Dart Pro 1 cyl. heads, solid roller cam (probably about .650 lift). The car has 456 gears and a power glide. I plan on shifting about 7500 rpm. The street ram's rpm range is 3500-7500. That sounds about right but I'm worried about it flowing enough air for a large small block with good heads and healthy cam. The victor tunnel may be too big with a 6500+rpm range. Any help would be.....helpful.

hey 427 sounds like you are going to have a nice fast ride.never see tunnel rams at the track any more. all these guys running fast with the big cube small blocks run fas as hell(in the 9s) with fairly heavy cars(3000-3300lbs) with the driver in, and they are all running big single plane intakes like the super victor, or dart intake, and a nice big carb like an 850 or even a 950 dominator carb.. bet you wont be going much over 6500 rpms to make all your power with that baby. the guys get tons of horsepower with these engines and they dont even have to rev them up too high.. just my thoughts. art

Hey Art, thanks for the reply. I don't see too many tunnel rams at my track either, or vegas for that matter, that's one reason I want one. And I think they just look bitchin. From what I've read and heard a 2x4 tunnel setup will make at least as much power as a 4 barrel on a single plane IF it is set up properly. I have a 3500 lb '68 Camaro with a 468 big block with a 950hp Holley running 12.0s-11.9s and I love it. I'm just trying to be a little different and have some fun, but I still want to go fast. I'm just not sure if the rpm range on these things is based on air flow, rpms, or both. I know the shorter the intake runners the higher the rpm range. I'm just not sure if a street ram will flow enough air. Thanks

Go for the smaller, those generate a ram effect by matching runner length to how the intake pulses. The pulse is more RPM dependent than displacement dependent. Good luck

Thanks starfire383. The the more I think about it my 427's rpm range is getting lower and lower. I was reading today about an LS 427 that made 660 hp and it peaked at about 6800 rpm. Right now I'm think'n a street ram and two 650 HP double pumpers would get the job done. Maybe if I was running a 350 or 327 I would run a victor tunnel and rev the crap out of it. Thanks again.

Actually with a minimum of 406 cubic inches, you should be ok with either manifold....but the street rams are going to make ALOT of torque.

Never had any problems with a tunnel ram...I love them....and dont choke that 406 +off with only 650cfm carbs...get a pair of 750's.
