76 Monza with 80 2.5 Crossflow Engine/Carb

Postby THEGAMBLERmtr » Tue Dec 07, 2010 10:51 pm

Electric choke hooked up to 12 volt wire. - Butttt it opens too fast! 76 did not come with this engine of course. Less voltage wires won't open the choke at all. Local shop said to get some kind of resistor. Any good suggestions? :?
Thanks - Mike! :bang:

Isn't the choke adjustable by rotating the disc where the wire attaches?

Older chokes were adjustable by loosening the "screws"- this one has rivets. The shop manual says you have to have a kit that is not available, to remove the rivets. 79-80 Monzas with this choke must have had a special lower voltage wire to open the choke properly.
Thank's - Mike.

Drill the rivets out and replace with screws, the mechanism inside is the same as earlier adjustables. You don't need a kit but should probably do the job on a workbench since the choke housings are somewhat fragile around the screw bosses.

If you've got another rochester carb laying around it ought to have the screws and weird little washers to make it look original. I'm betting the "kit" is a drill bit and those screws & washers

In 1980, what made a car run right was whatever it took to pass federal emissions standards, not what actually made the car run right. Which is why they adjusted your choke to pull off quickly and then sealed the adjustment. They knew damn well the choke wasn't optimized from the driver's standpoint.

good luck
