fuel tank additives

Postby flracer » Mon Jan 03, 2011 6:25 pm

My 75 Vega has been sitting about 2 years and not started.I got it running (runs very well)off a gas can.
What should i ad to tank with fresh gas until i use a tank or 2?

Ive heard seafoam but have never used it before.Any input or suggestions.

Thanks Richard

Just my opinion but I wouldn't run two year old gas no matter what I added to the tank. You are better off removing the tank and having it cleaned. Any radiator shop should be able to dip the tank and even put a liner in it.

I'd just pump the tank out. And add some fresh gas and go from there... You can add a product called 'Stabil' to prolong the life of the new gas. Also add it to the old gas, and run it half old / half fresh in your lawn mower.

It's not as good as cleaning the tank out like mentioned abouve, but maybe like me, your too lazy and short for time if you can just get around it.

X2 2 year old gas won't have deteriorated bad enough to require tank removal in my opinion.
Siphon/pump old gas out, put in fresh along with a can of seafoam and if tank won't get used up before storage again use Stabil as mentioned before.

There was so much tarnish in the bottom of my tank after two years, might have been three, that I had to have it hot dipped. It was not a pretty sight. It even ate the rubber piece on the fuel pump.

What's the gauge read? If below a half I'd probably fill it up, run it near dry then fillup again. Probably a fuel filter inspection somewhere in there. At two years I'm not overly concerned with varnish but am concerned with low octane and rust. Have run a lot of two year old gas before.

Might of turned into turpetine by now, drain it in a glass and see how it looks /smells. Might have moisture in it too since you live down south.
