Will it fit?

Postby monzacoupe » Thu Jan 13, 2011 4:02 pm

I was talking to my mechanic today and got onto the subject of my Monza and the rarity of finding headers to fit the Buick 3.8 block. Then he says that he has a turbo and manifold(intake and exhaust) from a '82 Buick 3.8 motor that he would part with for a couple of hundred bucks. My question... will it bolt on to my motor, or will it be a bit too much for a non-gear head like myself?

I do not beleive hanging low will be an issue, if I remember correctly the Turbo on the 3.8's sits Above the passenger side valve cover or manifold, so hood clearance may be more of an issue, and it should bolt up, FYI the carbed Buick Turbos' never seemed to run correctly to me, several people I know used to have them and were never satisfied with them, the FI Grand natinals are a whole different animal.

Thanks, I think you've scared me away from this, "getting it to run properly" more or less means, "you'll be tuning it forever" to me. I just don't have the skill, time, or tools for something like this.

well it depends if his the carb for the turbo set up also , but really id look into doing a fuel injection set up with it

either way once its set up and running good , it would be fine

I had this setup on my monza before I swapped it for a 350

You will need to cut to scoop the left side of the hood to make the carburator fit.

The oil pan was modified to allow the 2 manifolds to be joined toghether. You will need to spend some time to get this one figure out.

and the right side of the body has been crushed a bit to allow the exhaust to be routed after the turbo.

Tuning will be a little bitch if you've got no experience with carburator. + the brake booster will not cleared or you'll need a mini one. (mine didnt have one)

My setup was a saginax 4 speed and diff gear ratio 3.25

Really fun to drive, Eating the 85 generation v8 mustang. really Impressive. But No reliable at all.

Go Injection If you plan to go turbo. It's my opinion.

I bought a 1985 .8 turbo motor for my Astre Panel. I have done a boatload of research into this...

You will want to use a 1984-85 turbo motor. It has the SFI and mounts the turbo on top of the engine towards the back. The 1986-87 mounts the turbo on the right side of the engine in the front. This will create placement issues from what I can see. Height is the only issue I see right now but I haven't actually gone and measured the height of existing 231 I have now and compare it with the turbo motor.

The 1984-85 motors are known as "hot air" motors as the turbos do not use an intercooler. The 1986-87 motors did. You can hook up an intercooler to the earlier turbos. It will take some planning.

Even the hot air turbos can crank out 300+ HP. What an asskicker that would be, huh?
