Fuel injection

I am investigating using fuel injection on my ZZ4 crate motor.
Any clues on what will work and be practical with this combo in a Monza?
Edelbrock looks really neat but it costs a buttload. :(
Any ideas oout there?
I am open to suggestions.

id look for the 1's that replace the carb , and are self tuning , i know FAST , holley and a few others have something similar
first and best car owned 72 GT(changed to SS) panel wagon

I'm quite fond of the OEM Tuned-Port setup; it has a lot more visual appeal than the complete aftermarket systems that both replace and look like a carb. If you don't mind digging around junkyards, it's the cheap way to go. To feed the ZZ4 crate motor(100+hp more than a stock 90-92 TPI 350) you would need an aftermarket chip for the GM computer and maybe even some bigger injectors. There's also a bunch of aftermarket support for TPI that could supply a custom tailored computer/harness/injectors for your specific combo; all you'd have to round up from the junkyard would be the intake, plenum and runners. Swap a fuel pump into the tank that could supply the volume & pressure necessary and you're there. With an overdrive trans the TPI is just about the most fuel efficient setup out there and the long intake runners produce great throttle response.

I agree - aftermarket FI systems are too expensive. And coupled with their complexity, a properly-sized and tuned carburetor is still a good choice today.

I like the looks of the TPI as spencer mentioned.
I have heard that runners don't flow enough air to support higher power numbers, though. True?

The horsepower level of the ZZ4(350-ish) is probably right at the limit of what the OEM TPI intake can provide enough flow for.This is the cheapest way to get into FI other than an OEM throtttle body(which could never flow enough for the ZZ4), but it does have it's limitations. If you're looking for more power than this, even the most basic of the aftermarket self-tuning setups can handle upwards of 500hp.

the stock TPI throttle body will flow enough air to supply a 700hp big block

only issue with the TPI's is tuning , with a non-gm computer you can get alot more from it , but cost goes up drastically

I have been down that TPI road, and to be quite honest I would not do it again. Even with a fully ported set of heads, siamesed and ported SLP runners, an edelbrock lower intake, a fully ported plenum, a 52MM throttle body, and tons of tuning time, The 350 in my wifes 87 vette still felt choked off, and could barely manage 14 second flat 1/4 mile times.
You are way ahead to buy an LT1 intake and modify it to fit a standard small block, then tune that. My 94 vette will rip off low 12s all day long and still gets well over 20MPG on the highway. The LT1 intake is simply way superior to the long runner TPI in the real world. My honest opinion.

Does the LT1 use the newer different angle intake bolt holes?
Is it a big deal to modify or relatively simple?
What years used the LT1?

Just looked on eBay and found a buch of LT1 stuff, I noticed one thing where did the distributer go?
How do you run the oil pump with a LT1 setup?

LT1 engines were produced 92-96
I think the 92 manifold is less desireable but cant remember exactly why.

One of the things you need to do to make the LT1 intake work is add a distributor hole.
Also need to plumb the front and back coolant passages so the coolant can get across, as the LT1 is a dry manifold.
I think thats about it.
It does not look too hard from everything I have seen. There are guys that come and go that will do it for you, I do not know who is doing it right now. You might want to check on thirdgen.org

One of the advantages of that FIRST manifold is the option of mounting the throttle body on the side of the plenum. That would be a plus for the cramped H-body engine bay. Plus, it has the larger ID runners and manifold.

EFI is nice but I am not sure it's worth it. It's either going to require a lot of work or cost a lot of money for a fully designed kit. A nicely tuned 4 barrell works great for a nice weather cruiser and somehow just looks more "right" in a older car. I am not against technology, EFI is one of the best things to come to engine management, I guess it just depends what you want to spend and how much effort you want to put into it.

I like the OEM Tuned-Port If your running that off a OBD-I or OBD-II TunerPro will let you tune it from inside the car using a lap top.
TunerPro V5 has been officially released http://www.tunerpro.net/ I use it to tune my 4.9 caddy engine in my Fiero Using a OBD-I EMC
Stepping into Fuel injection was new to me. I just started a little over a year ago. Cramming my head full of new info. Take your time
And read everything you can find about Fuel injection.

I am adding in a Powerjection 3 setup into my better halfs Vega. Its a throttle body setup using 4 62lb/hr injectors and uses a higher fuel pressure then a normal tbi setup, around 50psi. Its self tuning and allows for custom tuning as well, to an extent. Works on setups up to 550HP. it is made by Proffesional Products, which sometimes has a reputation for cheapish offshore stuff, but the quality of the kit apears very good and well thought out, and it is assembled right here in the US, possibly with foreign made components, but then again, what isnt? I have heard people rave about the system, and people complain about it, stand by for a real world test in a few months. I have it mounted and plumbed, just have to finish sepentine drive and rad mount before fireup. Looks neat, almost like a demon carb and the PCM is mounted right on the throttle body itself, just 4 wires to hook up, plus an 02 bung in the exhaust. Her set up should be 380Hp or so, so it will be interesting to see how in works.
