Fuel pump fittage

Postby JimW » Tue May 17, 2011 5:15 am

Will a stock SBC mechanical fuel pump fit into the chassis without modifications? If modifications are required, then how extensive?

I think it will hit the frame which is why the factory went with a electric pump. Not sure how much modification would be necessary.

I had a 76 with a regular mechanical pump, the previous owner made a notch in the pass. side v8 frame plate for it to fit.

Thanks. I don't believe this will work, but has anyone tried using the stock 4 cylinder in tank pump for a V8? I see in the service manual that it makes 3.5 to 4 psi of pressure, which I believe is not enough.
Also, any recommendations for electric fuel pumps?

What size engine and power do you plan on? For a basic street engine the stock V8 pump has served me well. I have a 355 with a L-79 cam, Hooker 2135's and Carter 4 barrell AFB.

I'd recommend replacing the stock pump with a TBI pump, and use a Holley 12-803BP return style regulator. This will give all the pressure and flow you could use with a normally aspirated motor, and pretty much completely eliminate the possibility of vapor lock. 8)

Clyde,
When you say the stock V8 pump has worked, is that the stock H-body pump? Is that pump in the tank? If yes, then where can I get one or what year/model can i look one up for?
I would really like to keep the in tank setup, BUT, only if it works.

Rick,
A TBI pump? A TBI pump is an in tank pump, correct? Are there any that will work with a stock tank? If it isn't in the tank, then I would greatly appreciate some more details.

I'm still open to all suggestions.

Expect to be used as a street cruiser and tire burner, but hopefully will get to the track at least a couple of times a year

Yes, just remove the tank sender, remove the stock pump, connect the TBI pump, re-install the sender, plumb a return line from your F/P regulator, and it will work, as a system, better than any mechanical pump. 8)
