flaky fuel pump?

Postby 73Vegaguy » Sun Jun 05, 2011 11:46 am

I'm having an issue with my stock Vega. Yesterday I drove it to lunch with a friend, put in some gas on the way -- car was running great. On the way home it just quit dead while driving at 35 m.p.h. If I sprayed carb cleaner in the carb it would fire up and then die again. I shoild mention that when the car quit it was 90+ degrees and I was using the a/c. i had it towed home and put it in the garage. This morning it fired right up and ran great. I had a similar issue once last year on a cool day. i went to move the car to a new spot in my storage area and it wouldn't start. I tried it again a few days later and it started right up and ran fine. Never a problem with it again until yesterday. Any thoughts on what could be wrong? Flaky fuel pump? Vapor lock (doubt it)? Fuel filter plugged? Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks!

If it has the stock Fuel pump, that would be my 1st guess, when they start to go they sometimes just quit, then later they wil start working again for awile, then quit again. I had that happen with my 78 Sunbird wagon, changed the Fuel pump, and the issue went away.

I would strongly suspect the fuel pump as well. Next time it acts up, pop the air cleaner off and see if there's any fuel in the carb. 8)

Check the fuel filter in the carb.
My 77 Sunbird has the Holley 2300 2-bbl - the same as the stock Vega GT.
Car wouldn't start without starting fluid and 5 gallons of fresh gas in the tank.
Removed the fuel line at the carb and turned the engine over - fuel pump works.
Removed the fuel filter at the carb, connected the fuel line and it started and ran.
The paper filter element was bad.
