I usually check to see if it is a vacuum leak by seeing if the engine picks up when you shut the choke or put your hand over the carb to shut off the airflow if it doesn't have a choke. (it should stumble and die if there isn't a vacuum leak) If you confirm a leak, then do as Dick suggested to try and narrow it down. But it is always a good dea to replace all the old vacuum lines on a 30+ year old car, they will only cause you trouble 1 at a time.
The carb base gasket can also cause alot of come and go issues if it hardens and starts to leak.
