Postby csigler94 » Mon Dec 05, 2011 4:21 pm

is there a way to by-pass the cat. converter so i can run duel pipes off my 231 and not look at the idiot light because the o2 sensor is gone?

I could certainly be wrong but I don't think any h-body had an O2 sensor.

Dick,

I know the 1980 Models received upgraded Emissions, that may have included an O2 sensor (I have never owned anything newer than 79 for an H-body) I know that many 1980 model year GM cars received Computors to control the Carb mixture and spark advance.

Sorry I am no help with the original question,

I still have the original exhaust manifolds, Y-pipe, muffler and tail pipe, couldn't find the cat or mid section. off my 1980 spyder. didn't see an o2 sensor. sorry no help here either. wondering if it has a computer, maybe somebody can reprogram for o2 delete. my buddy has a 98 T/A he put headers and after market exhaust. he had the computer reprogramed.

Maybe a picture of the part in question would help.

If the O2 sensor is in the manifold, it does not matter if you have a cat or not, it's just providing feedback to the carb.
It's only the lower O2 sensor after the cat on cars newer then 2006 that will cause a MIL if the cat is removed.

Cheers,

Thanks everyone!
I havn't had a chance to really get in there as I just got this car which is my 2cd Hbody pontiac. My first one, a 1976 Astre GT, was so simple and purly un tampered with. This one however, was somebody's tinker car. Mostly entact, I discovered that the part that isn't so well presurved is the instriment panel. Low and behold, the bulb for the idiot light has been removed. So either way It might not mater.

Do you have an emsions label under the hood anywehre? If so,it should show the o2 sensor location. Most pre 86-88 cars had o2 feed back carbs, easly id by a wiring harness running to the carb(2and 4bbl) Most had a sigle o2 sensor near the exhaust manifold. If the idiot light bulb was removed, that tells me that there is/was a code set for some reason. However if the eng was runnig normally then you might be ok.If you are still concerned about it you can get a cheep code scaner at a parts store and find out if there is a code in memory.I have found that sometimes its nothing more than a blown fuze. Just a few things to look for.

yes ther emmisions label is still there and entact. I already put her up on a lift, and I could not find an O2 sensor and its not listed on the label. It runs fantastic, so I gonna go ahead with my plans on the duels.
