hey merle. how the hell are you. is the bolt pattern on zz engine same for a holley and (or) an AFB carb. some of those edelbrocks afb come in the 650 to 700 cfm range(and probably bigger) and have nice electric chokes and i think you cat get the metering rods fo make easy fuel enrichment adjustments.. i think those engines can make all the power they need with the 650-700 cfm models. of course you know all about the holleys art

im running an edelbrock 650 cfm thunder series avs on my 355 chevy, great forall around driving on the street, set it and forget it carb, easy on fuel. i also have an 800 cfm edelbrock for when i want to play as that is what edelbrock dynoed the top end kit with and it does wake up the motor a fair bit. i had a 650 demon on it at the start but it was just a pain in the ass from the get go and i made the speed shop replace it with the edelbrock cause it was a heck of a lot easier to live with.

I have always been happy with the AFB type carbs. I ran a Carter 500 cfm that I bought when I had the 262 V8 on my 355 for many years. I recently upgraded to a Edelbrock 650 Thunder Series and lam very happy with it. Not sure how it compares to the Holley but it is a simple carb to adjust and tune. You do have to carefully watch for hood clearance on whatever you use. It can be very tight. I have to use a drop base 14" air cleaner and a relatively short height K&N air filter element to get it to fit under the hood.

Myself I have a soft spot for the AFB,worked on them back in the day on Mopars.Like the man said, set it,forget it.Only other one I would use on a street machine is the Q-Jet,just like the Carters, set it forgett it. And holleys are ok,must be cuz there is a bucket full of them out there.Even had time on them in the Mopar shops I worked in.Matter of choice I guess.
