Carb leaking

Postby veehome911 » Fri Mar 22, 2013 6:34 pm

Alright so now I'm at wits end!! :bang: I rebuilt my 2bbl Rochester carb because it was leaking out what I think is the float over flow? ( it's a hole at the top of the carb. It was just pissing out gas.. Now at first I thought the floats were stuck open so I pulled it apart adjusted the float put in a new needle and seed and replaced all the gaskets.. Now I bolted it all back up and what do you know! It's still doing it... Soooo now I'm thinking maybe it the new fuel pump I put in? I picked up an entire fuel tank assembly at a rocking yard from what I think was a Chevy Oldsmobile. 94 I think. So is it possible that the fuel pump just had to much power and that's why it's leaking? Or is it still a carb problem?

Thanks in advance for the answers!

Sounds like you have a fuel pump for a fuel injected car which is WAY too much pressure. Those pumps put out 40 lbs or so compared to 5-7 pounds for a carb.

I am not aware of one that is designed to drop the fuel pressure that much. Why not just get the correct pump?

I really don't want to drop the tank again and try and find another pump that will work.. Would something like this work? http://item.mobileweb.ebay.ca/viewitem? ... 2597717829?

I don't know but that regulator is still designed for a fuel injected application. Sounds like it may lower the pressure possibly during idle or cruise situations (high vacuum). Dropping the tank is pretty easy as long as it's relatively empty.

With that regulator you would need to set up a return line to the tank for the extra fuel. I would think it would be easier to replace the pump than fabricate a return line. Just my opinion.

I agree with the opinions you're getting so far. You can regulate it down, but as pointed out, fabbing up a return line and adding the regulator sounds like way more work than switching out the pump.

I am agreeing with what Clyde (and others) was saying that regulator is to lower fuel pressure at lower speed/power requirements that regulator has a port for vacumm/boost reference (the angled fitting at the top) so the larger capacity injectors will work at lower fuel delivery rates, idle, cruise, coast, etc. this may still work I just couldn't say for sure one way or the other. I am contemplating a similar fix for a different fuel pump issue but with the lower pressure TBI pump (15# and from the online pictures it should be a bolt in to the tank sender/holder) which should be within the relm of a holley bypass regulator and I want MPI FI some day (you know when Money$$$$ starts falling from the sky) so I will need the return line eventually just going to have to instal it now. Did it start leaking before or after you replaced the pump?
