I removed the non-working pump from the tank, and was going to simpöy replace it with a new one purchased years ago. But: In the new one was no valve to prevent fuel floating back to tank ( I do not know the name of this valve in english, sorry). Is it unnecessary, or is there any such a valve which can be assembled in the fuel line ?
The original filter was also broken, is that thing available anymore anywhere ?
I probably found a reason to non-working fuel meter: insulation of the wire to sender was broken, and the wire touched the pump body. That will be an easy fix with a piece of fuel line as additional insulation.

The original "Fuel Filter screen on the end of the pump ;
that is shaped like a tiny sock ;
It can be replaced with a later model in tank fuel pump sock for a 1986 - 1992 V6 chevy truck;
with throtle body injection TBI ,,,that looks like a small pillow !and works just fine !

Just add a larger easy to relace after- market filter in the engine bay away from heat !

and if the carburetor has a interior filter ,,,,use it as well !

The filter sock generally comes with a new pump. You can purchase the sock separately as mentioned. I don't think there was any check valve in the pump, it's really not needed as it starts to pump as soon as the starter is engaged and continues to run once the engine starts and oil pressure is above about 7lbs or so. There's generally enough fuel in the float bowl in the carb to start the car without any concern about fuel running back into the tank. The only time it may be a issue is if the car sits for a long period and the fuel evaporates from the bowl. Still, the pump will fill the bowl pretty quick.

OK, maybe I try the pump I have already. There was a check valve in original pump, very simple system, inside the pump. Airtex seems to have quite cheap replacement pumps, and they are well available in ebay. Only problem is, that ebay sellers usually have very high mail costs to Finland...

Stock, there was a small plastic anti-drainback device installed into the in-carb fuel filter. At least on later models with a rochester 2GC.

No anti-drainback valve in Airtex replacement pumps, just fot one.

Generally speaking a anti drainback valve is not a big deal unless the car sits for a long time. There should be enough fuel in the carb float bowl to allow the engine to start giving the fuel pump plenty of time to get the fuel moving again. If the car sits long enough for the gas to evaporate out of the carb then it will take a bit to get the fuel back into the bowl. If that's the case then it's nice to have a bypass switch to turn the pump on for a few seconds to fill the bowl.
