Edelbrock 1407 600 cfm insular question

Postby 71GTKammback » Sun Nov 29, 2015 8:11 pm

Bought a 76 monza. 305 auto. Runs very well with and edelbrock 4 bbl manifold and a 600 cfm edelbrock carb.

The carb sits on an insulator maybe 3/4" tall. Due to low hood clearance for air cleaner I am considering removing the spacer/insulator. Wonder if it will act the same. Anyone know?

Thanks

Here is a link to Hot Rod Mag's site and the search results that came up for "Carb Spacer" generally most carb/engine combo's like them, so in short I would say you will likely lose something. How much, well??? Harry http://www.hotrod.com/search/?q=carb%20spacer

I am running a old Edelbrock C3BX 2 plane hi-rise intake along with a Edelbrock carb (same as the Carter AFB I had for many years) and fought with hood clearance issues. I would say you need to concentrate on the clearance issue first so if removing the spacer does the trick then just do it. I also had to run a drop base 14" air cleaner with a rather short 2.5" or so air filter element. Even with this combo I have my wingnut machined down for clearance and the air cleaner just touches the hood insulation. I don't know what air cleaner you are using so that is a variable you can play with.

droped air cleaner base is a good idea to try. it may cause littler clearance problems with linkage, hoses etc. coming from carb. you just need to try one. moroso makes one.usually dropping carb down(removing spacer) flattens out the performance a little, especially at low end, as the gas and air mix dont have enough time to blend to give a good charge down the intake. that's , one good reason the old factory 2 -4 intakes( low rise, offset carbs) on the early camaros and amx's were real dogs as street cars(at bottom end of power band). they perked them up a bit with carb spacers. its important to match the intake to your engines power makers(cam and heads and carb) to get the intake that will give you the best of both worlds at both top and bottom end. art

sometimes, with AFB/ Edelbrock carb, you get "heat soak" and the carb dribbles after shutting it off,
causing hard start,
a spacer/ insulator will solve that problem,
but if hood clearance is the issue, different intakes, are different heights, as well as air cleaners.

As I mentioned, I run a similar carb without a insulator because of clearance purposes. A 3/4" insulator is pretty thick, I have heard guys making one out of tempered Masonite (wood is a good insulator) and that would gain you over a 1/2" more clearance. I would just try it without and go from there.
