Electric choke issue

Postby 76wagon » Thu Oct 13, 2016 7:45 pm

I have a Holley 4bbl with an electric choke and I'm having a weird issue. Choke is working properly for the most part- pump it once to set the choke and the car fires right up in cold weather, give it a shot of gas after a few minutes and the idle comes down where it should be.

Here's the issue- after I drive for a bit it will idle a little higher, but if I give it a shot of gas it idles back down where it should be. Next red light, same issue. Any ideas?

If it's adjusted too tight, it may be stopping just shy of where the high idle linkage is still contacting the throttle shaft. With the engine up to operating temperature, loosen the 3 screws on the choke housing and turn it just enough to have the choke blade open all the way.

Got it figured out. Choke was adjusted properly, turns out the throttle return springs were so worn out they wouldn't pull it all the way back to idle without a little momentum.

I love it when something that's been bugging me forever turns out to me this ridiculously simple.

Ha ha thanks Harry. I'd like to think I earned it with how many times I had that choke apart and adjusted it once again only to have to same problem come back again. The frustrating part was that I'd never had a problem adjusting a choke right the first time and never having to worry about it again.

Now that I've got the thing driving with working brakes it's really satisfying to finally take care of all the little things that bother me about this car. Next up- shorter tires that won't rub all the time.
