Rochester Vara-jet 2-bbl (1982)

Hi all....So, I picked up a 2.8 v6 1982 model with a varajet on it. The carb body is split where someone overtightened the filter housing and leaks dangerously. This is in my new 82 s-10. The emissions controls label identifies it as the CHN series of emissions controls. Someone removed the smog pump, the original exhaust manifolds and replaced them with a set of headers, fouled up all of the vacuum hose routings, and probably couldnt get it to run and began throwing parts at it such as the fuel pump and the fuel bowl filter when they cracked the carb body and disabled their new fuel pump. The truck sat for over ten years when I got her. The has AC, 4 speed stick, non-computerized , great dash and body, but needs TLC....back to the carb...
. I am unable to find the exact model number of the carb. I read where the needle seats are different lengths depending on the exact type of emissions setup?? I noticed the absence of a vacuum reservoir ball under the hood. The vacuum canister itself seems to only have the gas tank vent line hooked up. We are going to a salvage yard to get a "frozen up" varajet to have a lower body that isn't split and leaking this morning for 20 bucks and go from there I suppose.
There are countless videos up on ewe-tube showing smog pump elimination, but none on this particular motor with this particular carburetor. Nor do they detail the subsequent hose routing and instructions on which hoses to plug or merge.
If any carb expert can shed some light on these proper procedures....FOR TEST PURPOSES ONLY...then I will eagerly await your responses...thanks in advance..Peace.

I dealt with these carbs for many years, 4 cylinders use a 1" filter, V6's use a 2" filter. If I remember right the V6 has a bigger primary also.

More info here in the manual... Choose Varajet from the list of carb manuals. Page 4 has the Id info.

At the salvage yard, check any "donor" S-10's you find; they should have a vacuum hose routing diagram on the rad support. But you should be able to eliminate pretty well everything except the vac. line to the distributor and a source for the A/C controls.

Thanks for the input, yes, we eliminated all but 2 vacuum lines, the vacuum advance and the dash controls source. The carb build worked and she starts and idles well. The air cleaner filter housing is kinda trashed, so its not on yet. Peace

She runs nice with 130K miles on her. One lifter tapping on this 2.8 with headers setup that will have to be addressed. See other post in "Off Topic section" and thanks for the input. Peace.
