Postby AusRs » Sat Jul 08, 2006 4:05 am

thought i would start this as i have pulled apart my Canadian Monza
may help someone when looking at a car

rhside inner wheel well
lhside lip between the inner and outer (where the body meets the "frame" )
panhard bar support
lower control arm front mount points (floor rusts out above )
rhside floor( about where the passengers feet would sit (another frame/floor issue)
both sides of the engine bay (another issue of a sandwiched plate rusting through the thinnest panel)
bottoms of front fenders and doors

dont think i have missed any .....feel free to ad some more .LOL

I declare next week...worldwide h body door week.

This is the week to take some time with your doors.

everything, from a rewax of perfect doors, to tending to that growing surface rust, to repairing a handle or hinges.

Then the week after its left rear quarter week!

The hidden rust that aggravates me is when your fenders are solid, but the inner firewall is rotted through. I had a friend who hit a rain puddle hard and water flew out the air vents and soaked him and the passenger. Surprise!

They also like to rust on top of the firewall under the fender. The cowl area can look nice and solid, but that area barely received primer at the factory.

will take more pics of the left side when i get around to fixing it
to me the main rust problems with our cars
GM put foam crap between the panels
GM put cardboard up against panels
GM put foam crap wherever they felt like
GM never sealed the places they put double thicness panels for strength
hmmmmmmm
that being said
GM never expected these cars to be on the road 25 or so years later LOL
in real terms my car is not as bad as some AU Holden cars of the same vintage !!

Mine's also in a pretty bad shape, and I suspect that just going to a regular bodyshop will only prolong the inevitable...

I do want it to stay rustfree for more then 5 years..

update ...whilst there was rust in all 3 panels on the lhside top of the plenum...or tank it is a very easy fix ......cut bend and weld ..dress up and cover with whatever you want to as the front fender covers any repairs :)
