rear axle hump gussets

Postby NixVegaGT » Tue Feb 12, 2008 12:09 pm

Here's the last of the rust repair and a chance to increase the tire clearance by flushing out the rear gussets. Here's what it looked like before I started:

Image

I flushed out the gusset and added some sheet metal gauge to make up the difference. I gained about 1/2" clearance so with a greater offset I think I can fit 16x8.5" rims in the back or maybe 17x8" with a +4" backspace.

Right now I have 15x8.5" with 3.5" backspacing. They go just past the outer edge of the wheel well rim. Here's how it looks.

I've always been a fan of the classic TorqThrustD:

A more inexpensive option might be the Torqlite though. They aren't bad looking and are a lot less expensive.

That looks great..excellent repair.

IROC-Z wheels all the way to the bank. :)

Torq Thrusts look good, too.

I like the torqlites but i think they're too flat.. just my opinion :)

Nice job on the gusset removal. Personally I think this should be done on just about every h-body. It definitely allows one to increase their rear tire width and is a pretty straight forward job.

I have always loved the Torque Thrust wheels!

They would look cool on a 71-73 Vega.

I saw a picture of the Torquelite wheels (or perhaps Drag Stars - very similar) on Todd's BBC Monza and they look sweet!

Here is a link to a thread about Todd's car at the track . it has some great pictures:

Torq Thrusts are my second favorite wheel ever. Timeless looks. My favorite ever are these.

I like the torque thrust but think they are better suited for older classics. I think the torquelite would look better on a H body.

I found this manufacturer of inexpensive wheels for racing. Diamond Wheels:

Check these ones out:

19 lbs.!! Cool. It's possible that they are not as tough as plain street steelies but at $45 I wouldn't be afraid of damaging them… Something to think about.

My biggest beef with the torquelite is that every time I've seen them the guy is running meats out back and skinnies up front. Bleh. I can't stand that prostreet look on a street car..sorry for my opinionated stance but yeah.. that's the way it is :)

I'm with you on that Colin, I like a more balanced look front to back. I don't have a problem with a little rake front to back, but I like to see decent sized tires up there too.

With my Vega I don't have much choice, hard to run 14" wide wheels on the front of an H-body.

While the Torque Thrust wheels are one of my all time favorites, I like the Vector / Hurricane style wheels that are on my Mirage. They look similar to the factory finned hubcaps that many Mirages came with. I just wish I could get a different offset to move the rears in. I have enough room to tuck the tires almost completely in the wheel well with the correct offset rim.

For what I am envisioning of Nic's car I would go with the Torque Thrust wheels. But my vision may be skewed

Alright wise guy... , but I think a lot of cars would look better with the average 6" - 7" inch tire vs. the skinny 3" ones that most people put on. Not to mention they would stop and handle a bunch better.
