Fender Install Question - Why don't bolt holes line up? Pics

Postby olds70supreme » Mon Sep 07, 2009 5:09 pm

I am trying to replace the fender that was dented when some yahoo backed into the car in a parking lot. However, the bolt holes on the front flange of the fender (that mate to the vinyl nose) do not line up. In fact, looking at the old fender and the replacement, the holes are not even the same. The top and rear holes all seem to line up correctly. I was under the assumption that all Starfire/Monza fenders were interchangeable save for town coupes. Do I have the incorrect fender?

Any help would be appreciated, I am starting to get frustrated. I may end up drilling/cutting new holes to match the mounting bolts.

I checked the part numbers and all the fenders are the same from 1975-80 hatchback cars between Monza, Skyhawk and Starfire, even the 2 headlight Skyhawks. I am not sure why they don't line up. Do you know for sure what car the replacement fender came off of?

When I got the fender I made sure to ask if it came from a town coupe (I believe that's what they were called?), and he said no, it was from a hatchback. It is weird, because all but a few holes line up. On the top flange (that the hood closes on top of) there is an extra hole in the fender that doesn't have a corresponding hole on the car.

Anyways, I ended up getting the fender on by slotting the top offending hole in the pictures to allow it to slide on. Everything lines up pretty good now, and I have all of the top bolts in. Thanks for the help.

in the first picture you have the fender lip on top of the radiator support. The fender should be below the radiator support.

 Yeah, I saw my mistake after I had posted and compared to the drivers side. However, there are still bolt holes that don't line up and/or don't correspond to any on the car, which I find odd. All's well that ends well, since I got the fender to match the body lines on the car.

Seeing as how the original poster has solved his problem, is a little hijacking acceptable?
Skyhawks,Monzas, Starfires and all have different patterns of holes in the fender for emblems(Sunbirds-no holes). It would seem to me that these holes would not have been drilled on the assembly line, so wouldn't there need to be different part numbers at some point like at Fisher body? Just curious.

I don't know. I doubt GM wanted to make a bunch of different fenders with the only difference where the emblem holes are. Somtimes if you look at different parts you will notice a lot of strange dimples in the metal. I suspect these are there for a reason but I don't think they would want to dimple a new fender which require body work to smooth it. Good question, but according to my parts manual they all have the same part #. Gee, my fenders have no holes

I'd say the hijack is acceptable.
I believe the holes for the monza 2+2 script and some of the "x.x Litre" emblems was punched by a machine on the line as needed.

The inner holes for the attaching points were likely all the same. (the ones hidden from view when installed) The front lip was punched with enough holes to cover every style of front facia.
