Plastic repair info

Postby kgroombr » Fri Nov 13, 2009 1:15 pm

The front and rear valences and the grille on my 72 Vega are damaged. My front valence is in two pieces and the rear valence has bad cracks and the mounting parts are broken off. I have all the pieces, and I have broken pieces from another grille.

Just curious if anybody has repaired these to where they are as strong or stronger than the original, and to where it is not noticible.

I would like to know your method so I don't screw up what I already have.

Thanks,
Ken

Ken, I think your best bet is to probably fiberglass them from the back and then put a small notch or "V" where the seam on the front and use some 3M FPR filler to close the gap. The strength would come from behind and then the front would be cosmetically repaired with the special filler. There are methods to "weld" plastic but I don't know if it would work on your parts, especially as a structural repair.

dont forget to drill a hole at the end of the cracks , that way the crack can not grow any bigger
