75 Monza engine compartment color

Postby Monzas » Tue Aug 01, 2006 1:56 pm

I have a 75 Monza 2+2 with the original paint in the engine compartment. I want to touch up an area on the inner wheel housing where brake fluid spilled. I was going to use a spray can of semi gloss black but I can see that the color is actually a very dark rootbeer brown. Can anyone tell me what paint I should use?
Thank you,
Kirk

Rootbeer brown? That is new....are you sure it isn't badly faded black?

Can underhood paint fade that much? The brownish color is consistent everywhere on the firewall and wheel houses etc. It looks black until bright light hits it. Items such as the radiator support and power steering pump are black even with bright light on them.
I have a 73 Chevelle with the original underhood paint too and it still looks black.

I think the engine compartment is supposed to be body color. The '75, '77's, '78 Monza's I've seen have had the engine compartment body color unless someone painted it the Hot Rod Black.

I've seen the exact colour that you descibed with a BB 68 Chevelle. I believe it has something to do with the heat and chemical reaction in the under hood enviroment.
Just repaint? the whole area with engine gloss or what really works neat is BBQ paint!

Its one thing to mask off an area on the inner wheel house, but repaint the whole engine compartment? I guess I have another project to add to the "someday" list.
Thank you for the info Russell!

PS, I wonder why my Chevelle's underhood paint never faded...

Darrel - from what I can tell my Monza has never had anything done under the hood except for routine maintenance. There was 1 elderly owner until 1994, and I bought it from the dealer that took it in on trade. It doesn't look like anyone has ever done any paint work underhood at all.
Maybe only '75s had the black, because I have seen other (76-80) Monzas that were body color.

My 75 V8 Monza came with a black engine compartment. Repainting it can be tricky, but can be done. I use Krylon semi-flat for this and most of my black parts.

My 79' Monza was a light blue metallic and the underhood was the same. My white 75' Monza (RIP) was flat black underhood. That one could have been previous owner though. Just my .02 cents

Although it has turned the brownish color, the paint still has some shine to it. I am going to assume that GM used the 80/20 black like they did on their other cars engine compartments. I can get a semi gloss black lacquer in rattle cans, so I will be spending lots of time masking and removing components for this project.
Unfortunately GM didn't paint the chassis black, it is beige, like the rest of the car. I want to paint the car the "correct for a 75 Monza" Burgandy. I have been repainting the chassis Burgandy to match, but I have a long way to go so the underhood area will have to wait. At least the chassis is nearly rust free (it's from the Los Angeles area).
