Body Color Door handle inserts on Spyders

Postby acstestinc » Thu Aug 03, 2006 6:44 am

With my near future paint job I'm planning on having some vinyl painted with the factory red and cutting it to size for the door handle inserts. Anyone else try this or any other solutions ? I don't think painting on the chrome directly will hold up if its even doable.

Painting on the chrome worked back then, and I've seen it (and done it) many times. Just mask it off, and do a good job of scuffing it with some scotch-brite, and it should be good! Worth a shot, nothing to lose. It's worked for me.

Had a piece of white 3M automotive decal sprayed with the same paint as the body, cut it to size and it looks prefect. Tried to get the paint to peel off the vinyl but it's on there good.

You may want to try some etching primer on the chrome also. I know someone that scuffed up his chrome bumbers and then used etching primer. The paint was holding up last time I knew.

I used a stock vinyl color from a graphics shop. ITs real close to the bright yellow, But does look a little different sometimes depending on the light. I would imagine you already looked into that for red? I also thought about painting the vinyl, but the stuff is so streetchy, I figured it wouldn't work very well.

It worked real good. I couldn't get it to peel or flake off. The Monza Red was pretty unique and I couldn't get close enough matching it to an existing vinyl color.

Paul, did you apply a single stage paint? did you spray it over red vinyl?

I'd use vinyl paint or if using the same paint you did your car with add flex additive.

I used white 3m automotive vinyl and same paint that was used on the front and rear urethane covers (flex agent added). Not sure if it was a single stage or not (not sure of the definition of "single stage"). Got a scrap piece of vinyl from a local auto sign shop.

Single stage doesn't require a clear coat. Two stage would be a base coat/clear coat system.

Got any close up pictures? I am real interested in how that turned out. I originally was going to tape off my handles & spray them, but yellow doesn't cover very well, so it would get a little thick, & hard to make a nice line inside the handle.

When I first did the vinyl match on my handles, it looked like a perfect match in the shop. Then I had the car near an overhead door & direct sunlight on it made it look darker. Well, actually it made the car look lighter.

Reds are usually somewhat transparent in the same way yellow is.
