Looking for a cheap way to put some color on your ride???

Ok folks, don't flame me here. I found this link on an S-10 site. It looks like a really interesting and is sure is inexpensive. There are over 80 pages to the link and its still growing. It looks like there are a lot of good results.

It starts here http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/sho ... ost2331682

and continues here>>> http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/sho ... ost2655425

It certainly isn't a traditional way to paint a car, but it is an interesting read

I've seen this car in person here in Toronto. And I'll be dammed if I knew it was a "foam Roller" paint job.

Years ago, as a kid with no money, we painted a '57 Ford "Canadian Tire Blue" with fine brushes and rollers and it cost us $5.00. Everyone thought it was a real cool paint job. The trick was in the wet sanding the car three days after the paint.

Ok here I go, I'm going to try painting using the method listed above. Here is a before, pic and pics after the first coat of paint.

That looks like way too much work to me. It just seems a whole lot easier to spray it one time than it does to roll, sand, roll, sand, roll, sand, roll, sand.......

I agree that it seems easier to spray it however the work is not the point its the price, $50.00 VS. $2000+ I dont have any money to have my car prepared and painted and this is a affordable option to at least save the body till i have the money for a profesional paint job.

It cost me just the cost of materials to paint my Astre... $300. I used Matrix Paint Systems and that layed on smooth as glass. Hardly had to color sand it. But then again, I painted my blazer at 17, so I've had some prior experience. And don't say I had fancy tools, because I did it in my buddy's shop... the same shop we do bodywork, detailing, engine work, chassiswork, and so on! Just need to grab some materials, and give it a shot! I got some guidance from my dad, and his friend who owns the shop, but I learned the most from getting hands on.

For me its more about NOT having the equipment, space, experience, etc to spray the car. I would spray the car if I had someplace I could do it, but I don't. So I'm trying another way.

Rick,

there is still a fair amount of sanding to be done, wet sanding, to get any trash out of the paint and to get rid of any orange peel. But so far I don't have a lot of orange peel, at least not anymore than a production car.

or did you mean you would give your son the instructions and turn him loose with the whole thing??

Rick,

This is turning out really nice. Here's a pic of a fender after 2 coats, wet sanding and now 2 more coats.

Rick,

I have only been working on it in my spare time so I've been at it about a week. Each coat takes about 15 min for the 2 fenders. Then I let them dry for a day and then I do the next coat. Last time it took about 30 min to wet sand them both, then another 15 min to paint them again. From reading the forum I got this from you could do a coat early in the morning and then another later in the afternoon, then wetsand the following morning. Its not a 1 day affair to paint a car, but it can be spread out as time allows. So far I'm liking it!!!

I've got 4 coats on it and will probably have to do 4 - 6 more as I keep finding more tiny dents to fix and it takes a few coats to cover up the work.

Man it looks great!

Question: could you post a couple of pics of the "professional roller" you use and the brand & bucket of special paint you are using for this?
