Its all good...I love to hear about the progress,

pretty soon its going to be in the 40's here, how cold is too cold to put some paint down?

I'd like to start now, but I might have to wait until spring has sprung.

that marine paint sounds like a possability, there is a marine store right near me, since I live at the mouth of the Genesee River and Lake Ontario.

So some marine paints and colors might be readily available to me...the thing is being able to find the color a few years from now.

Maybe for the red and blue stripes? Hmm.

Marco,

In the Mopar forum that I found this on, they say that it has been done in a un-heated garage in the winter. I've done a couple coats in my garage when it was about 50.

The thing to remember is that it may take more Mineral Spirits to get the consistency of the paint that you need. It will also take longer to dry so you may get more dust and trash in it. The dust etc is not a big deal as it will sand out. It would be rather cold when the wetsanding part comes along tho, I did that one day when it was 50 and my hands did get cold.

I wonder.....

I wonder if this could be a simpler solution to the age old question "how do I paint my roll bar"?

Mike,

I don't know. I know a lot of people here say that I should. I may practice on one of the nose pieces I have to see what kind of trouble I may be in for if I don't.

I know that when I did my Starfire, years ago I didn' t add the flexing agent and it didn't give me any trouble til I got sideswiped which the front took the brunt of. Then it cracked and pealed off.

This was a great thread to read. Thanks for being a guinea pig for us, Darrel. I'm not sure I'm going to try this but then again I've got a while until I'm ready to paint. A long while...

I think it's a great idea!

Ok, here's what I found out about the flexibility questions, I asked the guy who first documented this procedure and here was his reply:

v8mirage - the paint remains very flexible, case in point - i was driving my charger down a country road at night, and out jumped a deer, there was nothing i could do, i hit it at about 40mph, right on the front pass fender (which is fiberglass) and i watched it buckle up (flex) about 1 foot up as the deer came to a stop at about 9g's and died. Deer = dead, fender = perfect.

Then just to try something myself, I took the plastic paint tray that I have been using to paint, and basically turned it inside out, and none of the paint cracked, chipped or peeled.

I was actually surprised by the result of the paint tray. This is using Rustoleum.

The Brightside paint which is the single stage urethane paint, used typically on boats, I would think is designed to be flexible since it is used on fiberglass which can be somewhat flexible.

FWIW

Roller Paint!!!!!!

Darrel:
I'm starving for more progress. Is the weather too terrible to do any more work? I know you just got hit with some unreal rain storms. I'd like to see more picture of the body and how it looks now. I'm cleaning out the garage and getting ready to tear the Vega apart to get some body work done. (yuck) I want to try the Rustolum Metal Colors. They have a good looking Green. Keep at it. Keep us updated please. :)

Hi Randy,

My work on the Mirage has been delayed this spring. It hasn't really warmed up yet, and I have been doing some traveling for work. I am currently in Prague, Czech Republic for a couple weeks on business, so the Monza remains in the shed under cover, until around the first of May.

Thanks for the interest, I am anxious as well to resume the work on Mirage.

Yeah, this winter just won't go away around here. It's not as bad as you guys in the upper midwest, and we've had a couple of odd stretches of warm days, but overall it still looks and feels like mid-March, not late April.

Yea, I know the area somewhat. My dad married someone from Waldorf, MD. way back in 1972. I started 10th grade at Thomas Stone HS before moving back with my mom in Ohio. I still love steamed Blue Crab and beer.

Hey Darrel:
Check on a three wheeled car Velorex and the guy's from their club. I been wanting one of those for a couple of years. Look up a guy by the name of Jan Matl. He's in Prague. (mailto:honza@velorexy.cz)
Tell him the guy in Texas USA ask you to look him up.
I'd love to have your job right now.

Hey everyone, the July issue of Hot Rod did a segment on painting a car with a roller. They referenced the website that I found it on. Their conclusion was that it is do-able and does yield good results, check it out!

Darrel,
I agree with those who say thanks for being a 'guinea pig' and an inspiration for us. This is a lot of work and I appreciate your efforts on keeping us informed.
I need a little more inspiration - heh-heh. Any more progress and pics?
What have you done differently now that the weather is warmer?
