""the "Schedule and Item Number", but I don't know what that means.""
The schedule number... the first digits, are day the car is scheduled to get assembled. (it's not a calendar date...it's a production day that the plant has determined, they go in sequential order.. starting at 001. There are about 20 of these days per month). The second number is a tracking number. This keeps the cars in a sequential line... so no matter of the make and model or different vin's.... the line could stay in order... and production could be traced in case of a recall involving cars made during a certain time period. Such as, a robot missed 500 spot welds before anyone noticed.
St Therese cars and buildsheets (seen above) used an XXX - XXX format... Lordstown used a XX - XXXX. The actual corresponding calendar date can be found in Box one of the cars buildsheet.
A car built on the last day of 1978's cycle will have a 44-XXXX Since the cycle that year lasted 244 days.
