I have questions about my 72 Kammback

Postby Jitterbugdude » Fri Apr 25, 2008 3:15 pm

Hey guys, I just picked up a 1972 Kammback . I have a few questions: I have a side view mirror on the drivers side but none on the passengers side. Is this original? There is no mounting holes so I figured it came from the factory with just one mirror.

Also, it has power steering and a 3 speed auto (no powerglide)
I assume these were both options for 72?

Now... what to do with my 76 Cabriolet?

Options all 3. Base cars had one mirror. GT's had 2. 72 was first year for the 3 speed I believe.

Thanks... now, any idea what color the original oil pan is supposed to be?

Randy,

The stock 71-75 Vega motor was painted silver, the 76 was orange and the last year 77 was painted blue from the factory. Those colors included the oil pan.

That's the first I heard of any GM engine being silver. But I've never looked too close at a 71-75 vega engine.

Chevrolet used silver paint to promote the fact that the Vega had an alluminum alloy block visually.
By 76, they wanted to subliminally hide that fact. It was also the year of several head and minor block changes that provided the basics for a much more durable motor.

Well, I've owned (counting the one's I have now) 6 Vega engines, they were all silver except the 76 Durabilt which is orange. I never noticed the color of the oil pan though.. hence my question. As far as "painted silver" I'm not too sure but they all just looked like they were silver because unpainted aluminum looks, well.... like silver!

Counting the ones I have now, I've had somewhere around 20 including a new one in 71, 74 and 77. The head, valve cover, intake, exhaust manifolds and oil pan were all painted to match the block, otherwise those cast iron and steel parts would have rusted immediately. Granted, the paint did not last too long on some off those parts. The original paint on the oil pans always seemed to flake off after a few years.

Not all GT's have a right hand mirror. It is an added option. The rh mirror kit from gm comes with a template for where to drill holes.
The only Vega's that only had a little rust were the ones still on the assembly line.
