"Astre GT" What Year Is It ?

Postby Badsunbird » Wed Sep 03, 2008 11:30 pm

I've got another h-body body for you, question is what year is it ? It has got to be some where between a 74 & 76 isn't it ? Yea, I stole this h-body too !!! This one cost a little more than $15.50 though, but not as much as you would think ! This car only has 49,000 original miles on it !!! It run & drove perfect before it was parked 19 almost twenty years ago !!! The gentleman claims that with an oil & tranny fluid change & new battery, that it should run just fine !!! The interior, aside from the drivers seat, is perfect !!! The rust that you see in the pictures is surface rust for the most part. The lower drivers side fender is the only "rust through" damage that I noticed significantly.

I'm not sure if I'm going to keep this car or not yet, I'm going to try and see if I can't get it to run first and then make my decision. I am not familiar with the 140 engine at all, does this engine have a timing belt or timing chain ??? I'm sure if it is a belt that will be the first thing I change after the fluids.

So, judging from the pictures, can anyone tell me what year this car might be ? I haven't received the title yet, and when I went back to take these pictures I forgot to write down the VIN # & the keys to it as well. Any help would be appreciated !!!

Black GT Stripe package
140 c.i.d. Engine

Any input would be greatly appreciated ! :)

Steve, Have them check the drivers door for the "blue tag" for the month and year for you. It looks like Josh's clone car! . Looks like my 76 . Doug in AZ 8)

I would say a 75 or 76, most likely a 76. The 74 had a completely different grill/front clip. Not a bad looking car.

NICE FIND!!!!
I'd say it is a '75. I think the orange turn signals in front are '75 only.
The VIN and Cowl/Trim Tag will also tell you what year it is.
Yeah, it has the same GT Stripe as Josh's Astre, which is a '75.
Better if it were a '76, as you'd have the 7.5" rear axle.

The 140 cu. in. SOHC has a rubber belt-driven camshaft. These normally do not give you any trouble.
But, there are many for sale on ebay. I have about 10 of these if you really need one.

i'd say 1975 as the front is alittle different than my 76 ie the grill and turn signals.

Looks like a 75. It seems strange that the only 75-77 Astre's with a GT side strips are white.

Tha rust may be worse than you think, especially sitting for 20 years. I see some pretty bad spots. Still a good buy and a saver.

Oh, and change that cam drive belt ASAP!

Good Luck with it!

Now that the initial shock has worn off, I've been thinking about it more, I'm leaning towards 76. Mine is a 75, and it has clear park lenses. My 76 has amber. I prefer the clear ones, and luckily I got an NOS set off ebay. Odd that it doesn't have the rubstrips on the bumpers though.

The biggest difference with mine that I see aside from the year is that mine had a red vinyl top originally. Mine did have red interior sort of... white seats, everything else was red/burgandy. Really ugly.

Damn, if it were closer I'd snatch it up so I can have an identical twin to mine! Though I'd put a FI V6 in my next one.

But that is amazing. I've seen a few GT's in literature, and there was a red wagon on ebay last year that I wished I could've snatched up before. But this is the ONLY other Astre GT hatchback I've seen... and it's just like mine!

That car and Josh's car would be good "before and after" pics for some wax/polish company.

Here's the '75 Astre brochure with amber lenses: http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/main.php?g2_itemId=70104 GT is the last pic... a green one.

Here's the '76 Astre brochure with clear lenses: http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/main.php?g2_itemId=70106 GT is the last pic... a red one.
Notice on the '76 brochure, the Formula steering wheel was available with the non-GT rally gauge package.......

"SWEET RIDE" Josh !!! I wish this one was finished and looking that good, incredible story behind your car as well !

Thanks for the brochure links bugdewde, I'm pretty sure it is a 75 now.

I went and picked the car up up today, had to throw my old tires & wheels off my Sunbird on it since part of the deal was to give the GT wheels back to the guy that I got it from. He has a 72 Vega GT sitting in his garage that he has had since high school that only has 21,000 miles on it. He had sold his GT wheels years ago and wanted these to put back on his car to keep it original. Not a big deal, I have several others anyway.
I took some more pictures of it today and did a little deciphering myself and have pretty much come to the conclusion that it is indeed a 75. I've still got it loaded on the trailer and plan to take it to the car wash tomorrow for a thorough bathing and vacuuming, then I will take it back to the shop and start to figure out what it might take to try and get it started if the engine isn't seized up. I did notice that I will have to repair the battery tray right away since it is completely rotted through.
Here are a dozen or so new picture that I took today, I guess I might have to open a project journal for this car eventually too.
