Need help decoding a VIN

Postby Musicman » Sun Oct 19, 2008 8:53 pm

Wasn't sure where to put this thread so I stuck it here for now. Like it says, I'm trying to decode my VIN. Is there something on this site that can help me, or does anyone know how?

Okay, here's the VIN, I'm blocking out the last few digits with x's ;-)

7V77B323XXXXX

Here's the body plate, but it was hard to read

ST 73 7HV77 ST 203777 BDY
TR 920 64 64 PNT
1B 093020

Thanks for any info you can offer. I'm basically wanting to know if it is an Astre or a Vega and whether or not it is a true GT. Also, originall body colour and interior would be nice to know. The reason these questions came up was I started sorting out the wiring this weekend and it's starting to look like someone else added the GT dash and possibly put a Vega front end and rear on the car. So any help is appreciated, thanks guys.

Hm...

I dont think thats a 7 as the 1st position is it?

It should either be a 1 for Chevy or 2 for Pontiac.

Such as 1V77

The '64' is the paint code. I'm guessing its was a gold or tan color.

Looks to have been built the 2nd week of January. (1B)

At the St. Therese plant in canada. (2 in the 7th position as in B32)
1978 Monza Spyder V8 4speed, posi
1978 Sunbird Formula V6, 5 Speed, Hatchback
1980 Sunbird Hatchback 4cyl, 4spd.

yeah, I managed to figure out it was built in St. Therese. A few people have thought that first number should be 1, NOT A 7. It sure looks like a 7, but it is ever so slightly different from the other 7's in the number, so maybe. But then that would make it a Vega and not an Astre right? I did find a site for early Camaro's and they said that if the first digit is a 7 it means it was built by GM of Canada, very confusing :(

thanks for all the help guys. I t appears I now own a Vega and not an Astre, lol. So now I'm wondering what I should do when I go to insure it. Will this cause me problems as the bill of sale says I bought an Astre? Should I keep my mouth shut and just play dumb? The missus says I do that very well :D

Knowing ICBC, I would just keep your mouth shut, they probably will never wise up. And to try and change it will likely just cause more problems than you want. :D

I did not know that St. Therese built the Vega, too.
When did they diverge with Lordstown and use the plastic 'cowl tag' and put the manufacturing date on the door like my 1977 Pontiac Sunbird?

Also, you might consider replacing the engine with a Cosworth DOHC L-4 and call it a 1973 Canadian Cosworth Vega.
GM Canada was first with the Astre. Why not the Cosworth Vega? :)
The initial color for the Cosworth Vega was 'Silver Poly' - metallic silver - and I believe the first running prototypes were built in 1973.
So, you could have a rare car indeed! :D
