Its a Body tag ( not a Vin tag)

1 = Chevrolet
41 = Vega 4 cylinder
77 = 2 door hatchback coupe
LOA? = Van Nuys assembly plant ?
126390 = Production sequence at that plant
867 = Tan Custom interior with bucket seats
48 48 = Sequoia Green paint ( upper and lower )
D = last week of the month built
A51 = ? Stripe or GT code?

A51 is a simple code for bucket seats.

LOA is a mystery. Is it possible thats 10A? for the 1st week of October as a production date?
The date code is usually up in that top line. Along with a U for the Lordstown Assy. plant. Maybe a C for southgate.

That's not the VIN Tag. It's the Trim Tag or the Cowl Tag.
The LOA is in the correct location on the tag that designates the GM plant that built the car. LOA is a mystery - LOrdstown Assembly? Usually a U for the Lordstown, OH plant.
Does your VIN have a U in it?

The 'D' is the fourth 'WEEK' of the month it was built. There should also be a two-digit number before the 'D' on the left side of the tag that designates the MONTH it was built. The mounting rivet is right next to it.
If it was 10D - then your 1972 Vega was built in the fourth week of October, 1971.

Looks like there was a 3 week strike and major labor problems at the Lordstown plant in early 72; Read on; ( about halfway down it gets intense)

June 1970 to July 1971 GM's profits on invested capita! was 'only' 9.8%, having fallen from 16.9% in 1969

I would bet that GM would love to see that type of profit right now.

No Chuck , I was looking for links to the Lordstown assembly plant on wikepedia and it led me there. Looks like a missplaced body tag was the problem after all. At 100 cars and hour and pissed off - overworked workers, its amazing the car is still here today. :D
