Mine is definitely plastic, no question, I was outside the other day taking shots of it for the thread, not metal for sure.

Strange. I'll have to check that out next time I see your car.

My tag from 07B is metal. Very thin metal, but it will crease, not flex. And its shiney where it broke away from the rivets.

I have a question about 1980 production. I pulled out my build sheet from my old 80 hatch and it says schedule date 10-15 and the number is 288244. How long did production go for? This car was actually sold in may of 81 as a left over.

Good question. November? I think thats whats been said.

The 81 production totals will tell you how close your vin is to the end of the line.

The H-body.org facts say only 169,418 Monza's produced in 1980 and 53,415 m07's. Where do you find the 81 figures?

Top line, left to right:
* ST = printed on all tags, probably means "style"
* 78 = Year of production
* 1HR07 = Make, carline series, and bodystyle (see VIN decoding)
* U = Assembly plant (see VIN decoding)
* 344361 = Production Sequence
* BODY = printed on all tags

Second line, left to right:
* TR = printed on all tags, probably means "trim"
* 19V = Trim Combination Number (see option codes)
* A51 = Modular Seat Code (see option codes)
* 77L = Lower Body Color (see option codes)
* 77U = Upper Body or Fabric Top Color (see option codes)
* PAINT = printed on all tags

Third line, left to right:
* 05B = Time Built Code--produced in week B (second week) of month 05 (May)
* 19X = Option Designation for plant use; probably means Black carpet
(see option codes for more)
* 69-3681 = Option Designation for plant use; 69th day of production
for this model year (or possibly 169th or 269th) + a scheduling number of 3681

Fourth line, left to right:
* 191601 = Option Designation for plant use; 91,601st car for that
model and model year
* 02BLK = Option Designation for plant use; option code Z02
(Spyder appearance package) in Black ???

My 78 2+2 was made 01A on the third line which is Jan of 78 first week. It also has a number of 885701 on the third line. This would indicate 88th day of production? I wonder what is up with that number? I found 5701 on the vehicle ident number section of the build sheet. I don't know what the 88 is though.

Wow, that is at least 18,826 more cars (if I did my math right) produced in to the '81 model year.

The 80-5701 this works like this - the first 2 numbers count up the production cycle day from 1 to about 244.
everytime it gets to 99 it resets. so the very last production day of a 244 day cycle would read 44- xxxx

xxxx was a point at which the vehicle enters the final assembly line.. Yours was locked into slot 5701. Once locked in sequence it could not leave the line until the very end.
Order 9757 was broadcast throughout the plant, and carts of parts were set up to be trucked to assembly line stations with all the parts orders set up consecutively so the worker could grab a white spoiler for a white car (5701), then a blue spoiler for a blue car (5702) and so on and so forth. This made it possible to build any model at any time.

Hey Scan this sheet if possible and send it to me, I have a sheet with schedule date 10-15 too as well as a 10-13 car.

#288113

We should be able to figure out the very last production day if we can get the '81 total's.

I found this information on Wikipedia giving an exact date for the end of the Olds and Buick lines. The only thing I found for the Chevrolet and Pontiac line was they ran production into the spring of 80.

The 1980 model year was the last one for the Starfire and its derivatives. The V-8 engine option was dropped, as was the 5-speed manual transmission. Production ceased December 21, 1979, as Oldsmobile traded H-body production to Chevrolet and Pontiac in exchange for a higher allotment of new FWD X-bodies.[1]

Reading my 80 Starfire tag.
80 = Year Model
12 B = 2nd week Dec.
3HD07 = Oldsmobile, Starfire hatchback
7 Lordstown 307835 = 7835 out of 8237 produced ? <Yes

74B = ? < Seat trim code
72L 72U = med. red
L = Lordstown? Nope...Lacquer paint
A51 = bucket seats
74X = ? <Big 4 number (all carpet, dash, and rear panels)
74-0093 = 93 on the assembly line ? < In slot 0093 on day #74.the counter didnt start at 0000 everyday, it just clicked continuously to 9999 then reset, regardless of the day
Does this sound right?
Any ideas on 74B and 74X?

Hey Jon
Thanks for the tag shot.

I'm sceptical to beleive the Wiki statement since we already know that Monza and Pontiac production went in into the fall of 1980 (well past the Spring (my Spyder was build in August of '80). I assume that production of, say a 1980 car, would have started in the fall or winter of 1979 or would it have started in January of 1980??? If that is the case, then certainly Starfire and Skyhawk production could have ceased late in '79. What is the build date of your Starfire according to the decal on the door frame?

The 72 paint code is just plain "Red" according to my Olds Literaature. The 74B denotes interior colour, and from what I have it is Carmine, and for 1980 Starfires, was called "Carmine Red Legend Velour" according to an 80 Olds ordering info binder I have. You could either get a 'Legend Velour' or a 'Derma Vinyl' interior. The Legend and Derma refered to the textile shading and vinyl grain respectively. Did your interior have a different colour accent with the red (like white or black)? The 74X seems to denote Sunbird colours with a different colour interior accent but I also have it down as later model cars (79 and/or 80) with "Big 4" interiors. I think the Big 4 was just a term applied to the style of cloth but the Olds ctalog doesn't mention Big 4 at all so. I can't understand why there would be a 74B and a 74X on the Trim Tag though, they seem to point to the same thing.

Do you happen to have the buildsheet for this car, this would answer all the questions and help me complete my RPO Codes listing as well???

The colour numbers in the RPO Codes meant a lot of different things over the years and different model lines. For example, I have found that RPO Code 26G is at least 3 different items ...
- blue cloth or vinyl interior for 1975
- blue Frisco cloth interior - Sunbird '78
- blue cloth interior for 1980

and 15L and 15U also have 3 different applications
- Silver paint - 78 Monza
- Platinum paint - 78 Sunbird
- Silver Metallic paint

I have "Big 4" explained in my Chevrolet Assembly manual:

Its about 4 big interior items, the load floor carper, the regular carpet, the dashboard, and rear interior panels which always co-ordinated.

Within the H body line up it's safe to assume that color codes were the exact same, regardless of advertising name.
All those codes for paint and interior are the same, (same numbers = same materials/formula)

74'B' I believe is Vinyl, Cloth interiors usually had a J...as in 74J - refers to the seat covering and matching trim pieces.

Since there both '74' its safe to assume the whole interior was solid carmine. 74x is the 'big 4 number'

I don't know if I'm restating what you just said, but those are different names for the same paint depending on what model got them. Like my '78 is 67 Saffron metallic, but the same color on a '78 Trans Am was called Ember Mist.

You guys are right, of course. I figured as much but I want the RPO Code list to reflect all the various names for the different car lines from year to year so a Sunbird guy knows his colour name was different from a Monza, know what I mean? I'm making changes to the RPO Codes list to reflect more of the changes. I just wish I had more production, ordering.dealer manuals. It will take some work on my part but well worth it and kind of fun to do really.

Thanks Marco. That helps.

Bryan,
The interior was all one color (velour). I changed the dash pad out a few years ago because the Oklahoma sun had turned it to toast buy the time I got the car. Build sheet? That would be the holy grail. I wish I had one with all the options this car has. The carpet had already been pulled out and pieces of auto carpet just laid over the factory sound deadener. I've looked behind the door panels and under the seats with no luck.

Thanks for the help
