Sorry to revive a dead thread but i am trying to figure out this vin decoding thing on my new monza's. 1 of which is a 1980 so if i understand correctly if the body tag has a b29 on it then it came with the spyder option package from the factory?

on another note it seems you are collecting these trim tags and copies of peoples build sheets? if so and if your interested I do have the build sheet for my 1980 sunbird that i can send you a copy of, or post a pic of... and the 77 monza i bought i am just using as parts, when i am done it will b sold as scrap metal i would have no problem with taking the trim tag off of it and mailing it to you.

It's a good old thread, lol. No problem reviving it.

1978 is my year of most focused study, but I can do some interpreting on the info you have. On the 1980 sheet, it will be interesting to see if yours was part of the extended production run. On the 77 i assume you have just the trim tag as buildsheets are very rare in 77 models. If you have one great. I know one was recently found tucked into a seat bottom. Either way, post them it will be cool to see. At least for me.

i was getting a little confused trying to make sure my pics came up, in the last post the build sheet and the first body tag are from my 80 sunbird which is the first carpictured, then theres the body tag of the 77 (apparently) monza parts car which i dunno if its a spyder or not but it has decals.. and a not factory paint job anyways its the next car pictured, the last tag and car which has the big white stripe is an 80 monza which i am kinda hoping is actually a spyder. anyways any help decoding is always helpful.

2 things i would really like to know, is the 80 monza a spyder? and when was the sunbird built (which it dont seem to say anywhere on its build sheet) cheeers thanks for the help, TJ

Neet. Your 80 was made Just before Christmas 1979. It appears to indeed be a factory spyder with the B29 code.

The 77 is a little interesting. No telling if it was a factory spyder or not, but for sure it was a Yellow one when new, and it was also one of the very first off the 1977's. Built in the first week of Production it look's like. Late August 1976. it was number #433 of the first 500 monza's

The sunbird was built a month after the spyder. In January. The last week of January 1980. on build day number #98.

Thats cool.... it does kinda suck that the 77 is from a diffrent province and would be basically imposible in its condition to ever get registered because i was born in early 77.. oh well anyways THANKS for the info I am super glad to know the 80 is a real spyder seein as how if the sunbird still wont pass an out of province inspection then all the new parts from it will go to the spyderwhich will become my only h body. and i always wanted to know when that sunbird was built seein as how i have had it for almost 20 yrs. :th:

Cool thanks for sharing. The tag indicates your car was built during the 2nd week of April 1977. The line wasn't moving nearly as fast as it had been. So everyone had time to build your car. They even had some extended time off around this time.
Some of the first Monza's (for the Lordstown plant) were rolling down the line then.

It was originally white. Top number is it's body unit number. This number included Vega's and Van's, which were made on the same property, but a separate plant. The bottom is it's number as an Astre.

The buildsheet will help decode the F. It would have something to do with how the body was built...extra holes. Seeing as how the code is where most of the high end option codes are, that required holes, I'd venture to guess that it might be fore the rear spoiler. I could be wrong. It was built on the 118th production day for that model year..

Thanks Marco! So it could be a factory spoiler car after all woot woot!!! I still need to get the car down off the stands and moved...got the passenger too close to the wall can't open the door far enough to get my big butt in there lol. Once I find the build sheet I will post that up too. Almost getting to the point where I don't want to cut this car up lol. But I do plan to have as much history on this car before the build gets rolling along to much and that may change the direction I will go with it.
