Post Your Cowl/Body/Trim Tag pictures here

Postby fyrftr50 » Thu Mar 19, 2009 2:56 pm

Anyone and everyone with a second Gen H-Body (Monza, Skyhawk, Starfire, Sunbird) please take a photo of your Cowl/Body/Trim Tag and post it here. There are a few of us that are trying to get to the bottom of these Tags and the meaning of all the codes on them so we can then make a Trim Tag decoder. Marco has done the lion's share of the work and has figured out most of it, but there are still some questions to be answered. Here are a few that I've copyed from other posts recently.

If possible let it be known if there's also a buildsheet with it.

Trough Lens contribution of 1980 buildsheets, we now know that box 58 tells if you have the 2 tone dash option seen mostly on 1980 spyders.

I now would like to see a buildsheet with F41 H/D suspension, but no spyder option...

Box 58 on my black Spyder (was tan interior with black underside dash) has "BLAC" in it. But my Road Hawk has "1S" (of course my Road Hawk has an all gray dash - as they all do). The other Road Hawk trim tag I have a photo of also has "1S" in it (by the way, this trim tag is vastly different from the other one on my own Road Hawk.

My Road Hawk has F41 but isn't a Spyder, lol.

Yeah. I've noticed that box 58 (1980 only) will either have the interior color listed, or say BLAK when the black lower dash is ordered.

On the buildsheet for the F41 only car, box 21 whats listed?

The tag pictured above is from a St .Therese car.

Were the roadhawks also drop shipped like the mirages?

Thanks Bill.

With that info it so far:

Cars with no sway bar got "** **" in the box

Cars with F59 front sway bar or similar RPO got

"FT **" - Standard front sway war, no rear bar.

Next Step up..F41 RPO =

"FT 02" -Standard front bar, and additional rear bar.

Above that we have Z01..1980 V6, All V8

"FA 7B" - different front /rear sway bars. Presumably thicker.

I have an "in between" combo with Y99 Handling package (Sunbird Formula V6)

"FA 02" - Spyder front and F41 rear bar.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
More "buildsheet bingo" on the way...stay tuned.

Anyone have a buildsheet with Z01 and without F41??

Box 21 says "FA 78" (definitely an '8', not a 'B' and my 80 Spyder with F41 had the same code in Box 21) - if I recall correctly, the rear sway bar is 7/8", maybe that is the "78"

Your right, I just double checked the numbers and it looks like a, maybe a Mirage tag? It was saved in one of my Road Hawk files so I just assumed it was a Road Hawk tag from a 'hawk I parted out from PA. Good Eye.

Yup, like the Mirage, Roadhawks were 'dropped shipped' to Robin's Industries in Warren, Ohio (5232 Todd Ave.), for the Road Hawk decals, seats, spoilers, air dams etc.

Yeah, my bad on the 'B'...took a look at the orignial, not a photocopy it is an '8'.

The code for white paint threw me off. Knowing RH's were based on Silver cars.

That tag would make sense for a mirage...no stripe color codes listed, as would be the case witha Drop Shipped car.

I wonder why the Road Hawk tag would have the number 43 after the paint codes. I assume it refers to the Y43 Road Hawk package RPO even though the cars were shipped elsewhere for further assembly. I know the rear spoiler and front air dam as well as the fender extensions were assembled by Robin's, as well as the decals and striping, obviously. But maybe the code "43" was in place to tell the Buick assembly line guys to install the special Road Hawk seats.

I get pics of the trim tags from all my cars including the 2 Spyders and Roadhawk. Although my Roadhawk production wise is just a few numbers off from Bryan's.
I will try to get them all tomorrow to add. I currently don't have any build sheets on any of them.

That could absolutley be it, since the seats were factory installed, and unique to the RH. It could have also meant to leave certain items off the car, like nameplates and side mouldings that would interfere with the RH package.

Some trim tag things I'd like see.

Sometime after 05, 1978 and before 06, '78 The federal conformity paragraph was removed from the trim tags as well as
"ST BDY, TR and PNT"

I'd like to find 2 trim tags that will narrow up the date of the change.

And for 1980, I'd like to find the date of the next trim tag change.

My tags won't shed light on anything additional to what has already been posted. It looks to me as the NightHawk tag is a triple 19 L,U & A. Black with Black stripes. Cool!

I did find out that GM Heritage does not have the 81 production totals showing the Monza's. But some new reports have been found in another building with Pontiac cars. I will find out soon if they have any on the Sunbird. I also should be getting the additional Buick information Saturday or Monday.

Does anybody know info on Ken Mahoy's Spyder? Year, buildsheet etc... Brian

Hmmm, scanning my memory banks for Ken Mahoy's car...It's a 78. with a C06. I guess thats obvious.

I suppose we can assume if L=Lower and U= upper than A= accent. Makes sense to me. (paint codes only).

I'd like to set up an online calendar that maps the build dates out. for 78 79 and 80. But I dont know how to get something like that set up in a website.

Each day could be clickable to see listings of vehicles built that day, an estimate of how many were built that day, and any other tidbits I can think of.

How cool would that be??
