Color of GT wheels

Postby kgroombr » Mon May 18, 2009 7:01 pm

I hate to be the one asking questions all the time, but believe me, I search the forums, FAQ, and Google the heck out of it before I come here.

I cleaned up the GT wheels for my 72 wagon. Each wheel seemed to have a different color on them. A couple were silver looking, one was dark (almost black), and the other was a shade of gray.

What color are they supposed to be? Doesn't have to be exact, but something that is pretty close.

Thanks,
Ken

I think the GT wheels, as in Vega Wheels, were the gray, more of a dark gray. The same style of wheel on a Spyder was a semi-gloss black. And there were some that were color matched to the car, like the Formulas.

My goal is to do a restoration, but I might just pick a nice color and go with it. I did some google searches, but most of the pictures I find either show the car at an angle distorting the color of the wheels, or the picture is a of such low quality or small that it is hard to discern the colors.

If anybody knows what color they should be, please let me know. I need to paint in at least a couple weeks, so if I don't get anything difinitive, I will probably go with a dark gray/charcoal as I think that would offset the orange of my 72.

Thanks,
Ken

Ken, My 72 wagon is not a GT but I have 3 GT rims in my garage. I'll check tonight but I'm almost positive they are grey!

I beleive they are supposed to be the same color as a early 70's Z28 wheel. The website http://www.ss396.com has the correct color paint for the z28 wheels. I posted a similiar question on http://www.nastyz28.com a year ago. Someone chimed in that there is a rustoleum pewter color in a can that has the same color, texture, and sheen as the z28 wheels. I just could never find it. I bought some spray paint from NPD last year for the z28's. But it was too much of a greenish tint compared to my original spare tire rim. The inside of the rims are a lighter color. NPD does have that color in a can also. It is correct. Th two pictures are of a camaro with what I beleive is the correct color. I took this picture at a local car show. The other picture is of the NPD camaro paint on my rim that I think is to greenish. Nice, but not enough grey.

the 2nd pic of the vega wheel , looks like its painted like the 5 slot rally wheels , which is a argent silver , which has a green tint to it

Yes, you are correct. I forgot it is called "argent silver". I think there are a few shades of Argent silver between different manufactures - GM, Mopar, etc. Like I said, its a nice color. just not as dark "grey" as I was looking for. Only two rims on my car are painted this color. Because I wasn't sure of it I only did two. Not so easy to take all 4 rims off at the same time.

The argent color is too 'silvery' for the Vega wheel.
The darker gray appears to be the correct color. Looks better, too.
Here's a pic of some wheels off of my Astre - I am assuming that Pontiac and Chevrolet specified the same color:

That last picture's color looks like my original spare.

The color of the wheel with the Cooper Cobra tire is Gunmetal. It came in a rattle can from Wal Mart, I think it was krylon paint, they came out really nice looking.
