I'm much more familiar with the later Monza tags and some of the info on yours is a little foreign to me. You can find some of the info here ... http://www.h-body.org/library/hbodyfaq/index.html ... click on General information in the left hang margin and check section 1.15

01A on 3rd line - I beleive your car was built in the first week of the first month of production for that model year (72) or first month of that year of production
A51 on 3rd line is front bucket seats for the monza so i assume it is same for the Vega
46 on 2nd line - could be an exterior paint code although I'm used to seeing an 'L' and a 'U' behind the 2 numbers (Lower and Upper colours). No idea what colour Vega used for code 46 though, it was not used on any 2nd Gen H-bodies.

That is interesting.
The 14177 is the body code normally associated with only the 1971 Vega according to the FAQ. It is a hatchback coupe
TR is short for TRIM and 863 is the code for the interior color and trim. Apparently, the FAQ doesn't have these codes listed. Here's a good example of trim codes for a 1960 Impala: http://www.60impala.com/trimcodes.htm
And another for a 1972 Camaro: http://www.nastyz28.com/camaro/camaro72.php#trim
46 is a green color from other other GM models and makes. Can't confirm that for a Vega.

I have a january 1972 vega shop manual that states 14177 as 1972 hatchback, but it doesn't break down any other codes. Im assuming the LOA stands for los angeles, but thats just a guess. The original paint under the red is green. This car was delivered/sold through a dealership in flagstaff arizona, see pic. I think the dealership badge is kinda neat

Hello.

LOA, would be Lordstown, Assembly. In Ohio.

the 46 probably is that green color. Later H bodies had a very similar blue-green color with code 48.
light green was 44.

Its interesting to see that they had not started the "XX-XXXX" date coding yet that you find on the later build's from that plant. That may have started in '75 with the advent of the full sized 8 x 11 buildsheet.

That 01A is the first week of January... Mid-way through the 72 production cycle.

Marco
What would a date code for an early assembly car be? Like built in November of 1971? I assume since the 01A is first week of January, and not the first week of production for that model year.

Hey Bryan.

The model year changover is usually the last week or 2nd to last week of August. So the earliest cars will have a date code of "08D" and "08C".

OK, I know I'm missing something here that is obvious but I must be having a brain fart. Since 1980 was an extended model year with 1980 cars built into the fall of '80, what would there trim tag codes say? My black Spyder has 08E on the trim tag and on the door jam it was built 08/80 but where on the trim tag would you differentiate from an 08/79 and an 08/80 built 1980 model? Especially since further reading of my trim tag states 50-9757, which, if I recall correctly, means mine was built on the 50th day of production, schedule #9757??? That doesn't make sense, certainyl built well after 50 production days.

Also noticed some 1980 trim tags have '80' while others, mine for example, have 'A', which we know by the VIN# is 1980. Dam I wish they kept things consistant.

Same as in the fall of 1979 - month and week built. They don't have to be unique or any different. The body number would be much higher in your case. Perhaps some research on the 1969 model year GM F-body - which had an extended production into November 1969 - might confirm that.

They kept on going. so you would in essence have a second set of tags with 08D, 08E, 09A...ect.

Thats not too hard, an 08/79 will have very low Vin and Body Numbers. Whereas the 08/80's will have numbers up around the total production numbers .

Your '50' could equal day 50, day 150, or in the case of the 1980 extended production run, day 250, which is where I think your Spyder falls based on it's date code and vin #.

Yeah there were some minor tweaks to the tags now and then. Probably to keep the fed's confused, lol.
