Bumper question

Postby Vegavulture » Mon Feb 13, 2012 2:13 am

The bumpers on my 77 Astre have a thick black rubber strip that is fixed to the center horizontaly along the entire length. On some other h body's the same year i have seen just plain aluminum bumpers with no rubber strip . They look so clean and without a ton of tiny holes for that center piece. Anyone know why ? Did they offer this when you bought the car? If so , how do i go about finding a set?

I believe the bumper strips were a option or they may have been standard depending upon what exact model you got. Are you looking for the plain bumpers or replacement strips for the ones you have?

The Bumper Rub Strips were optional on every Model Astre sold. With the exeption of 1975 SJ's were they were standard. You could order the rub strips alone, or with an option package such as the exterior Bright Group, and they may have come with one of the other exterior option groups. The Bumpers are the same as the 74-77 Vega, so that may help your search. and the bumpers are different as the rub strip bumpers have many holes in them to mount the rubber.

I added a couple of pic's for comparision, the 1st my 78 Sunbird Wagon with the Strips (but with 76 Astre Grills)

the 2nd is my 77 Astre Formula with out the Strips

I do have an extra set of Bumpers with out the strips but they have many scratches and may need to be recromed. Good straight Cores. Let me know if you are interested. $100 plus shipping for just the bumpers, no Brackets, or mounting Leaf springs.

Shipping is probably expensive. I have a set of the solid ones in good shape, no dents, or major scratches, that I would like to trade for yours as I like the rubber strip. I will send a pic, but if shipping is high, probably not gonna happen. I am in Beltsville, MD and bounce between here at Augusta, GA at least every couple months.

Thanks,
Ken

Not to hijack this thread, but can you buy the rubber new?

I don't think you are hijacking. You have a valid question.

I haven't looked for new rubber, but the biggest issue is that the two bumpers are physically different. The Bumper that accepts the rubber strip is formed different and also has a bunch of holes around it for the mounting screws to go through.

If you know a source for new rubber, please let me know.

Thanks,
Ken
