Buildsheet data reveal's 'extended run' info in Fall of 1980

Postby marco_1978_spyder » Mon Apr 08, 2013 8:26 am

Going over some of my 1980 buildsheet's and referencing Bryan's page with the production total's..

http://monza.homestead.com/files/HBodyP ... bersWP.htm

I realized I have some number's telling me some thing's... Chevy report's list the total thru august, and don't have any data about the Extended Production run (assembly after 8/22/80)..
The last known Monza Buildsheet, in the extended period 10/15 has the last monza at 288,113. thats 18,695 Over Chevy's reported total.

It also put's the Monza total OVER the Sunbird total, so we now have Proof that the last H body assembled was indeed a Monza.

The last known Sunbird buildsheet's have the total's still LESS than the Total known, indicating Pontiac's number is All of them. With that info the buildsheet dates can be projected to the possible end of the run.

I'm off to work so I don't have time to re-write another post about the projected end of the line.. so I'm going to cut and paste a PM I sent to Bryan. Here it is:

""Well 1979 production- 305,041 by 12 is 25,000 cars a month capacity. Split monza's and Sunbirds about equally and you get about 12,500 each a month. Almost 20k monza's (18,695) for almost 2 months .. 8/20 to 9/20 to 10/15..does sound about right.

Both Sunbirds and Monzas were in the extended run... So it looks like the Sunbird number Pontiac released, counted all of them thru the extended time.
But Chevy only released the numbers through august. If this is true, then the Last H body was indeed a Monza.
-Cause the known total of Monza's is now higher than the Sunbird's.

I have an extended run Pontiac Buildsheet, and the total is Under the production total. That makes me think the Sunbird number was correct... might help up with a better approximation of when it all ended... a buildsheet I have at 10/13, list's Sunbird # 164,087..,thats 23,892 from the end. So at 12,500 a month, thats 2 months from 10/13 that production likely ended..

Or possibly right up to the Christmas / New years, holiday break at the end of 1980."

Makes decent sense too....If you had to rip out and re-arrange parts of the line you'd do it at a time when the plant is usually in hiatus, which was Christmas /new years time. When the plant was finally reset for the J cars by early spring, they could have started early on the '82's to catch up with the lull in 1981 models.

This is an interesting thing I find with my build-sheet data.

You look at the data one day and see nothing, you look at the same sheet of information for a while the next day and something jumps right out at you.

EDIT/update, I had to search old threads and I found the one where he mentioned the car below. I totally don't even remember that thread. But hey cool new info. Glad to finally know the VIN.

Marco remember when Dick Balsley mentioned GM Heritage had what he believed to be the last Monza made? Here is the pic and the VIN. Has an "A" for 1980! Hope this helps! Brian

Please find attached a picture of the last Monza. The VIN is 1M27VA7303934.

What a find.

That would mean that 203,934 Monzas were built for 1980 of which 34,516 were built in the extended model run in the Fall of 1980.

OK, Brian, for your next mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find the model breakdown of these 34,000+ Monzas. Your head will now self-destruct in ...

BOOM!!! It would take Red Matter to do it

I guess we can say there is one down (of so many).

You look at a Post one day and see nothing, you look at the same Post for a while the next time and something jumps right out at you.

At least Marco thanked Dick Balsey for information on the last Monza. Thought they might share, it worked. He also mentioned they have pictures of the prototype Mirage. Hmmmmm.......

Maybe, Jack P. mentioned a picture of the all black rear with the tail light edge chrome blacked out. Doyle's has tail lights like that and Dick B. mentioned looking at their pictures of the prototype with the same. He thought they were doing the correct thing by using the blacked out tail lights. Hope we can find out.

We already have a couple of shots of the Rapide (less paint) with the all-black rear end and taillights blacked-out as well.

Super awesome. Thanks for getting that info Brian. CAN YOU GET THE TRIM TAG DATA????????????? I'll even pay for a scan of a buildsheet.. $10?

So to close out what Buildsheets can tell us... (And I still have to peek through a couple more 1980 sheet's Len sent me)

At the tail end of production the average daily monza total was 607 unit's.

If you plug the numbers into some simple calculations, they suggest 26 more build days from the last Known buildsheet date 10-15 which was day 180.

That Date suggest's a likely end date of Monday, December 22nd 1980 on day 206. Let's see if the trim tag has an 06-XXXX #. and a "12D"
That's right before the typical week off holiday break. Perfect time to to get the line reconfigured while loosing as little normal production as time as possible.

And then to reiterate:

The very last H body ever produced: was a silver 4cyl Monza Coupe #203,934 Built as far as anyone can tell, on December 22nd, 1980. Some 66 production days into an extended cycle. -There's that number 66 again. (66 unimates robot's first installed at the plant, Plant opened in '66)

Most of the assembly line was ripped up right behind it, and the J-saga began.. zzzzzz

I can ask and see. They are going to send me some pictures of another prototype Mirage today. No black on the front and the tail lights have the chrome edge blacked out. I hope that I can post the pictures they have a personal use policy but maybe a low-res pic will be ok to post.

Thank's for the offer but they haven't charged me anything yet. Brian

Super Bri. If we could get the top left hand box of the buildsheet, and trim tag it would be super duper cool.
