Is this the D98 Pontiac Sunbird upper body stripe?

Postby stage169 » Tue Sep 02, 2014 8:30 pm

Looks like there were a lot of Sunbirds made with the D98 option code. I looked around some hoping to find another one but I've not lucked out yet. This stripe on the Sunbird is new to me, I found these pamphlets GM had for their new cars from 68 to 80 and there are some cool pictures. I'll get around to making a big post for them but for now I was wondering if I've picked the correct RPO for this stripe. Let me know, Thank's!

I dont think it is, of course my car has a vinyl top but i have the build sheet for my car that says it has that stripe, there is another code right under neath it that says gold stripe, i am basically positive that my car still has its original paint, and the only stripe on the whole car is gold so i assume thats the original one, if you want i can take some pics and post of both the build sheet and the car

If I'm not mistaken 1980 sunbirds actually came stock with the huge stripe on the side, similar to a 1980 spyder.. Customers had to delete the stripe to get a car without it... and Most dealership order's deleted the stripe, as well as most customer's. hence why you may never have seen the stripe, or only seen one or 2.

I saw one or 2..way back in the day. Not sure if this was the D98 stripe. Not sure how accurate my story is either. But I wouldn't make that up. I have it in my head from either hearing it or reading about it somewhere. And also not refering to the sunbird widebody stripe kit. which had some cool decals.

Pontiac used D98 for the formula graphic's kit on Firebirds, so my guess would be D98 would be the 2 tone tape stripe that separates the formula accent color from the body color.

heres the build sheet and a couple of pics of the only stripe on my car, i am sure this paint is original and there is no sign of there ever have been a wider stripe anywhere there was something else on the doors and fenders when i first got the car a long long time ago which i removed and i am almost positive it was the chrome molding like the car with the stripe u posted anyways i hope this helps,

Thanks for the help, I think D98 is just like beakerztoyz's picture. The color even matches his build sheet.

Bryan's site shows the Monza Sport stripe for 79 & 80, a lot like this Sunbird's stripe. I bet the product description manual would help!

I just was given a 1978 Pontiac Product Manual Dealer edition. It shows the D98 Stripe to be just like the one on beakerztoyz's car. I do not know what the stripe would be in the picture in the 1st post. But the D98 on the coupe and on beakerztoyz's car both have vinyl roof's. So maybe the stipe in the 1st post is a 79-80 sport stripe as you have speculated. The W50 Wide Body appearance package is intereting, I do not recall seeing many if any Sunbird coupes with that option. I have attached picture of the D98, W50, and W66 Stripe packages available for Sunbirds for the 78 Model Year.
