John Doe H-body

Postby tinsfci » Mon Sep 14, 2015 7:51 am

Hello,

I´m doing some Cold Case investigation. Can you state if this (R.I.P.) is (was) a Monza, Skyhawk, Starfire or Sunbird?

Easiest way is to look at the VIN tag on the dash.

Not doable. It´s gone in the cruncher (R.I.P.) :(

This is the only pic I have of it.

Well Per we can rule out Sunbird. The 'birds were never available with the wrap around tail lights. So at least that eliminates one, early Skyhawk's were visually identical save emblems , steering wheel, and that sort of thing so you are a little closer, but in the end you are back where Clyde sent you the VIN. A "decoder" is on Bryan's site, and lots of option breakdowns to help you deduce your solution. Harry http://monza.homestead.com/monza.html http://monza.homestead.com/files/VINdecoder.htm http://monza.homestead.com/steering.html etc. follow the links for more answers! You posted while I was typing, so you will have to use your memory of the little details, best you can

Thanks Harry. At least something: No SunBird.

I never saw the car myself. This is the only pic my friend took some years ago, and I´m trying to "match" this vehicle with others I have paper on.

I have plans to start a H-body registry in Sweden. Some of you may regognize me, even if I don´t post that much here.

My first Monza webpage on the Internet was up n running already in 1999! :) Unforunately, the original site is gone but I have rebuild most of it here:

Oh ok, it's gone.....well then I am not sure how you can positively say what it is. Maybe something with the color as I am not sure if Starfires and Skyhawks came in red? Of course red is a pretty common color so maybe they did. Doesn't have the rear bumperettes so I think that makes is a 75-77 but otherwise I don't have a clue. Most likely a Monza I would guess....

The dash looks to me like a 75. Also cant see the Skyhawk bird on the tail lights.

Was the bird on all Skyhawks or only certain years?

What about that chrome emblem on the rear hatch? Can that give any clues? Or is it something previous owner put there?

Can't quite make it out but it looks awful big, not sure if that is factory or not. The Chevrolet emblem that would go back there was a lot smaller on my car.

it is not a starfire. if it were it would have a recess along the bottom of the rear panel
http://www.auctionsamerica.com/images/l ... 243_05.jpg

there is no emblem above the body line on the fender so it is not a buick

my bet is monza and a 75 too.

OK, so far we have:

- "we can rule out Sunbird"
- "it is not a Starfire. if it were it would have a recess along the bottom of the rear panel"
- "there is no emblem above the body line on the fender so it is not a Buick"
- "cant see the Skyhawk bird on the tail lights"

- "Doesn't have the rear bumperettes so I think that makes it a 75-77"
- "The dash looks to me like a 75"

Pretty good! :)

Conclusion based on your inputs: It seems to be a 1975 Chevrolet Monza

Could the gas cap indicate anything? Chrome vs painted?

"cjbiagi" Doesn't have the rear bumperettes so I think that makes is a 75-77
Clyde and Per My '76 had the outer bumperettes, and that dash looks like a '75 to me too. Maybe that emblem on the hatch is a dealer tag[?] I don't recall if my '76 Skyhawk had the tail light insignia or not I didn't have it long and that was '85(?) but I think that was only on some years/models.
