I had an original 72 Kammback that had the engine compartment painted a satin black. I have seen them both ways. Not sure what made them pick one or the other.

Just because the engine compartment was body color from the factory does not mean it should be left that way. I'm a fan of satin black, especially if the body color clashes with the orange paint that(as far as I'm concerned) all Chevy engines should be painted.

Spence, couldn't agree with you more about the color of ALL Chevy engines.....Chevy orange!
Can't speak about the Vega but my Monza came with a black engine compartment. Really a matter of choice, but the point that Spence made about clashing with the engine color makes good sense.

I agree with painting it flat black for color contrast.I was just wondering how it was done from factory. What color would you paint a ls motor.......Vinny

I would recommend satin black rather than flat black.

I wonder if those are painted before the body is finally assigned to a build (ie; preproduction/or pre-ordering as sometimes some parts are being built before official production starts) Therefore no official build no official colour to assign, just them getting a jump start on the new model year run?
