Automatic VIN# decoder

Postby tinsfci » Wed Sep 14, 2016 9:54 am

I got some help from a friend of mine - who is also a good programmer - and we ended up with a "automatic" H-body VIN-decoder :D

I did like Bryan, used the data from the original VIN# Decoder found here on H-Body.org. I also used some of the info on Bryans updated version.

You can find it here:

http://h-body.se/VIN-decoder.php

NOTE! It probably has a lot of decoding errors/bugs at this time in the beginning, so don´t rely completely on the output from it.
Some searches will also probably generate an "UNKNOWN" in some parts. The plan is that I update or add data to the database when you encounter such output.

And...please report errors in this thread so I can fix them.

I hope you will find it useful!

Thanks,

/Per

Thanks :)

There will probably be VINs that ends up with "UNKNOWN" in some fields. But that is easy to fix

Mine is a 1973 but the vin decoder is showing it as a 1978.
I X'ed out my VIN but left the relevant 6th number that shows 3 indicating 1973.

Fixed! I had missed some info for the '72-74' cars. (The "1978" year under "Assembly Plant" is from Bryans page and refers to 2nd Gen. manufacturing)
Now it reads:

Body type : Coupe/Hatchback
Model year : 1972
Assembly plant : Lordstown, Ohio, USA (2nd Gen: 1978)

Try again please :)

Pretty slick. The G engine code for my 79 Starfire does cause it a problem, though.

Carline series : Starfire

Engine : UNKNOWN
Model year : 1979

Hi,

engine code "E" is not listed on the H-body FAQ here http://www.h-body.org/library/hbodyfaq/ ... .html#1.14

Do you know what engine it is/was equipped with from the beginning?

Can anyone else comment the "E" engine code?

Thanks

If Rob's car is indeed a "Cosworth" [and it does appear so] it would then have come with the 2.0L DOHC inline four. Harry

OK. The only engine code for the Cosworth 2.0L DOHC is "O" according to our FAQ on this site.

I added the "E" code now, meaning = "same as O"
