Thanks, mldeolde
It took me a long time to locate that car. I wanted it after I watched a Dirty Harry movie 20 or so years ago.

I like all old cars , especially those with big v8s

And i love convertibles. That's a sweet car.

Speaking of cool movies with Fords in them , Burt Reynolds was in a movie called White Lightning about a former moonshiner that had a 70's Ford Galaxie or LTD with 427 in it and a 4 speed. I feel in love with them watching that movie :D

If I'm not mistaken, that same movie shows a 4-speed car but in one scene, when he comes to a stop and parks...... He throws the column shifter up into "PARK".

I love all Burt's car movies. I'm a huge fan of the 2nd generation Firebirds since my first car was a '79 Firebird. The Smokey and the Bandit movies I and II rocked (I didn't like III too much).
The Cannonball Run was hilarious, too.
Stroker Ace is pretty good, too.
Let's not forget Hooper.

You've got a great old car there. Very unique, just like your Vega. I've always wanted a big ol' land yacht with a huge power plant that was muffled down real quiet. A real "sleeper" so to speak. Been looking at some Boat-tail Rivieras lately but the '79 Trans Am purchase has sadly taken all my play money.

The movie loads slow from Youtube but the car is a 71 ltd some of the time. Burt says its a 429 in the start of the clip.

The dash is complete. :) It will be sometime before we put it in the car as, there is a lot of work to do on the Vega. I hope you all like it. Tell me what you think.
Thanks for looking!

more progress

Postby Caveman » Fri Apr 04, 2008 4:39 pm

This is an update on the progress of the caveman Vega. I have not put any time of my own on the project, as I have been working on the 521 Ford. My friend, "gt350fme" that I work with on the Vega and the person that owns the car, has been working on it and we have some progress to report.

This is the housing from "Auto weld" and it has a custom 53.25 wheel flange to flange, hopefully centering the 15 x 7, 3.5 backspaced rims. We have a positraction center section with 3.25 gears. My friend shot some paint on it and here are some pictures.

Oh, I am almost done with the Ford so, soon I will jump back on the Vega.

What was the price of that housing? Auto Weld is in my hometown, they do good work from what I've seen but I've never stopped by or bought anything from them.

For the rear end my friend "gt350fme" paid $749.95 that included the housing, axles and GM end caps. We also had them short it more then the standard width for our application. Also, the wheel studs cost 68 dollars more, and this did not include the center section. With center section the total will come to about $1750 dollars.
It all looks great to me but, we will see how it works. Don't forget to add your bump stops.

Postby Caveman » Mon May 05, 2008 2:23 pm

Here are some picks of there rear end on a test fit into the car. my friend has done all the work on this rear end as my time has been spent doing other things. You all know him as gt350fme, he owns the car and we are both doing the rebuild.

I must say I was happy with how the wheel fit in the wheel well, we must have measured everything 10 times, 225x50 15x7 rim.

Damn, you da man.
I am trying to get a set of 8'' to fit that way with 235's on the back,
I have a don hardy 12 bolt that I might have to narrow a little to get the fit you have? also I might mini tub it a inch just to get what I want?
Keep us posted on the ride, it's gonna be waybad!!!!!
