Gas Tank Cleaning??

Postby Hoonbash » Wed Sep 20, 2006 6:49 pm

Am looking for the thread where a board member cleaned the tank through electrolysis???
Looked completely through Bob's site and never found it.
Anyone know if new tanks are available??

Thanks-Hoonbash

Thanks Peterpan

I'm trying that method right now but it doesn't seem to be working that good, maybe I'm a bit impatient.

It was your post that got me to thinking about the gas tank in my 74 Vega,it hasn't ran in approx 11 years.Opened it up today and there's a lot of rust scale.Dodged a potential problem there!!

i have been putting off droping the tank for a long time because i didn't want to deal with it yet i was thinking it would be bad and would have to do this to it but i got real lucky

some one has done a thread on this
they filled the tank with a water and washing soda mix then bent a peice of bar to go inside the tank without touching the tank then hooked a battery charger to the tank and the bar don't remember for sure but i think negative to the tank then possative to the bar
they said not to use stainless due to somthing toxic
and it will produce hydrogen gas running a electric current threw water so be sure to venilate good

it has been done by some one here i just can't remember who does any one else remember any details

All I can say is WOW
That Muriatic Acid really works.Too bad I never took some before pics, the first pic shows what the whole tank was like, fairly thick scale.

Drained it out after soaking all night and took the garden hose to it and saw the scale come off, went to the car wash and blasted it.The top still needs cleaning so it's another cycle.Plan to neutralize with baking soda.

Rinse #2
The Top of the tank came out fairly good, the bottom is like new.
I'll have to figure out how to reach in there and give it a good wipe down.

lol-yes-seems like gas tanks are a definite issue for these cars,,,nothing available aftermarket-salvage yards wont ship them(trust me-i'm in the biz) well-there was one in oklahoma??or somewhere out west they wanted $75 for the tank and $175 for the shipping,,,sent it to a local repair shop-they said not gonna happen-everytime i seal a hole a new one appears,,
after some research i bought the KBS gas tank sealer kit$65 with shipping,,,cleaned the outside of the tank at work this weekend and gonna seal it this week
Any advice appreciated

I took mine to a local radiator shop, had them boil it out and patch 2 holes then 2 coats of liner in the tank for $120. Then 2 coats of por-15 on the outside.Radiator guy said the tank will outlast the car now

I saw a post here about having a tank cleaned by a rad shop and relined twice by them. I called my closet rad shop and they told me they would do that to a gas tank. Without knowing the size or condition of the tank, he gave me a rough estimate of $250.00 to do it.

Maybe I will take my tank to WA if they will do it for $120.00

Hi,
I have been unable to locate an aftermarket gas tank for these cars. I took my tank to a radiator shop for cleaning/sealing. The results were excellent, buy the downside was that they charged 200 bucks. The car is now gone, but I kept the tank for a Kammback wagon project.

gas tanks with a small hole.or even a large one or a series of pinholes are not really a large problem ,the simple way to patch them is the same way roof plumbers used to fix guttering on a house
step 1 cleanoff the external area to be repaired
step 2 make a patch panel to fit over rusted/damaged area
step 3 turn on your rather large soldering iron .............mine is about 5/8 head generates a LOT of heat !
step 4 "tin" the patch
step 5 "sweat " the 2 pieces together
step 6 clean up/sand/paint area

IF you have a small series of holes just clean up the area around ,heat up the metal with your soldering iron and gradually fill any holes ,i repeired around my filler neck with this method

NO naked flame is required to patch a fuel tank at all
the solder method is a tried and proven method of repair that will last as long as you have the car

I believe most of the tank liner (inside coating ) repairs are very worthwhile !

A cheap way to get the rust and dirt out is to fill the tank with a few hundred sheet metal screws or somting similar (I did one with gravel too). Then just shake the tank and flush with water until its clean inside. It works suprisingly well, almost like sandblasing it.
